The development of printing allowed encyclopedias to be created, but accessibility was limited and there was a lot of wrong information. Then the 20c Internet developed, and the long-cherished desire of mankind came true through Wikipedia.Within a month of its launch, Wikipedia created 200 items. A year later, the total number of items increased to 18,000. It is a moment of collective intelligence. Wikipedia's economic value is estimated at $3 billion.

After reading Link's article, I learned many advantages of Wikipedia. I want to share it with you.

Value of Engagement, Openness, and Sharing
Wikipedia's strengths lie in its participation, information sharing, and openness. Information is power as it enters the information age. In that context, Wikipedia is creating a new knowledge power. Knowledge power led by a small number of experts was distributed to individuals because people could access and modify and edit information at any time.

Few absolute contributors, many general contributors
Both the top 20% and 80% of the long-tail area contribute to making Wikipedia alive. This differs from the conventional theory that systems account for only the top 20%. The content can be created and modified together, so it is not focused on a particular minority.

Platform for free communication
Wikipedia is the product of endless debate. No one blames the person who modified the text. We can express our thoughts as they are, and both agree and disagree have free opinions. Then, when most people reach an acceptable level, it becomes a stabilization stage.

Weakness

Of course, there are disadvantages. There are cases where anonymity is used to defame certain people, post false information, and destroy cyber order. The British BBC has revealed that the CIA manipulates Wikipedia's editing. The point is that the IP of the computer that made malicious edits to the Iranian presidential item, an enemy of the United States, was the CIA.



The wiki world is expected to continue to expand in the future. This is because the quality and amount of information generated by collective intelligence is becoming abundant. In the past, if the economy was an outstanding minority, now it is an era in which ordinary people become the main characters.
