W15 : What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?  The most important thing I learned from editing Wikipedia is the joy of participating in collective intelligence. Before the class, I only used Wikipedia. But I was given the opportunity to edit Wikipedia through class. It is difficult than I expected to edit a steady every week. But I was pleasantly able to edit the idea that my hard work contributed to making a better encyclopedia. The joy felt when I found a topic that lacked explanation became the driving force for editing. I thought it was a small group of people and I thought it was their job to create a collective intelligence. However, as I edited, I realized that spontaneity and enjoyment were very important factors in creating Wikipedia. 2. How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments?  The assignment in the other class was usually to write a report. It was a task to write an individual's arguments or t...

W14: Did you know / Park Chanyoung (박찬영)

1. Summary 'Do You Know' introduces one of the less well-known articles newly added to Wikipedia. It provides a channel for users to access a wide range of topics and facts and provides users with new sources to drive them to recreate other information. It is okay to deal with commercial or political issues as a means of advertising, or as a means of promoting commercial or political cause, but DYK should not provide an inappropriate advantage in such matters. Four basic criteria are used to determine whether they are suitable for DYK. Articles should be new and long enough. There must also be a credible source. Finally, it should be written within Wikipedia policy. The new article to be registered must have been written within seven days. And, more than 1,500 characters are required. More than 1,500 characters are required. 2. Interesting Point The presence of these pages is thought to be an effort by Wikipedia to become a sustainable encyclopedia. The pre...

W13: After reading "Categorization" / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. Summary This article explains  the  categorization  function in Wikipedia.  The primary purpose of a category system is to enable readers to quickly find information on a topic. When naming a category, it is recommended to be as accurate as possible. All Wikipedia pages must belong to at least one category The   categorization  of articles should be verifiable and neutral. C ategorization  should generally be uncontroversial.  When categorizing articles, the most important thing is to define the characteristics of the topic.  2. Interesting point 'Diffusing Categories' was very interesting. The process of diffusion was interesting. It diffuse in such a way that subcategories belong to the parent categories or coexist. This does not mean that all subcategories function as "diffusion". This is called a non-diffusion subcategories. Subcategories defined by gender, ethnicity, religion, and sex should be ...

W12 Article Development / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1.Summary Wikipedia articles start with stubs and become well-organized articles. Wikipedia articles start with stubs and become well-organized articles. It is recommended to search for topics that are not in Wikipedia, or to select topics that are requested from Wikipedia to write articles. The article starts with a short stub and is completed with the addition of content. Research is needed to write an article. Information from reliable sources such as books and papers is needed. Write an article after completing the research. It should be made in article was a neutral point of view. It is also necessary to spell correctly when writing articles. Articles should be written in an encyclopedia style. The referenced document should be listed at the end as a link so that it can be trusted. Adding images and graphics at the end of the article makes it a better article. It receives feedback, modifies, and becomes a better arti...

W11:After reading "Commons:FAQ" / Park Chan Young

1. Summary  The articles include projects, copyrights, technologies and communities. The first content is about the project. "Wikimedia Commons" is a media repository. It is created and maintained by volunteers. It provides a central repository for all types of media, including free licensed photos, diagrams, animations, music, voice text, and video clips for all Wikimedia projects. Copyright is the most important thing here. All media uploaded must be in a public domain or free licensed content. It is possible to use the media on this site externally. Various rules exist in the community and must be followed. There are many technical considerations when uploading files. This article describes technical issues and rules to follow in the use of this community. It's not just a place to post random files.  2. Interesting Point I thought it was simply a space where various media were stored, but efforts were being made in various ways to maintain...

W10: Can we think of some example of how internet has changed our culture? / Park Chan Young

The process of accumulating and sharing knowledge in the realm of individuals or certain groups has changed into a new form of collective intelligence. An environment has been created in which anyone can easily access the collected information, and anyone can contain new information. SNS also serves as a repository. In the past, if you saw a photo album to reveal your memories, you now leave your memories on SNS. It also helps to realize democracy. Encourage the public to participate directly in politics. On the Internet, people freely express their views without any restriction of social gaze. There has also been an Internet newspaper where anyone can become a journalist and write.  An environment was created through the Internet to raise voices on social issues. Recently, due to Corona, cultural changes have been made through the Internet more rapidly. Many of the face-to-face activities have been replaced by non-face in online. Shopping methods have...

W9: Do you think Wikipedia is reliable? Why or Why not? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. Opinion I think Wikipedia is reliable. If we look at Wikipedia itself, we might think it's unreliable. But compared to Wikipedia and other sources in the Internet, Wikipedia is a more reliable source. First, articles written on blogs are personalized information. Even writers can upload information without knowing it's wrong. Also, the author's individual thoughts and biases can enter the article. Wikipedia, by comparison, creates information through the power of collective intelligence. More neutrality can be observed in the process, and errors can be corrected. In addition, Wikipedia's information has a source, which helps users to determine whether it is reliable. 2. Discussion Point Nevertheless, it seems difficult to trust Wikipedia completely. What would Wikipedia supplement to gain more reliability?

W8 : What do you find difficult and enjoyable? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

 1.  What do you find difficult? The first person to start Wikipedia is hard to edit. While editing, it is hard to figure out if you are editing in the right way. Also, as I learned in class, I wouldn't even have started without training in editing.  2.  What do you find enjoyable? It is fun to add new information. It's interesting to think that someone will get information from my edits, just as I get it from Wikipedia. I usually like to be helpful to others, and Wikipedia editing also gives me pleasure.

W8 : Reliability of Wikipedia / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

 1. Summary Wikipedia can be edited by anyone. It is also possible to edit anonymously. An anonymous editor is an important component of Wikipedia. But this could lead to criticism of Wikipedia's Reliability. Wikipedia editors may not have expertise, competence or credentials on the topics they contribute to. Experts say Wikipedia articles are more reliable than non-experts. Wikipedia is said to have high accuracy. However, experts say Wikipedia should not be considered completely reliable because it contains about 13 percent of errors. Also, Wikipedia can deliver politically biased information. In fact, editing Wikipedia based on political understanding was controversial. Wikipedia's credibility is being questioned due to these various issues. One of the ways to dispel this suspicion is from reliable sources. Based on reliable and independent sources known for their fact-checking and accuracy. It also posts only comments from trust...

W7 : Good Faith Collaboration : The Culture of Wikipedia / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. Summary The book explains how Wikipedia has become a successful encyclopedia. Good-will cooperation is a very important key to Wikipedia's functioning properly. Openness is also an important direction among Wikipedia's policies. This book is very helpful in understanding collaborative culture. It describes Wikipedia in terms of socio-cultural and technological aspects. It also allows Wikipedia to face and reflect on its problems. This book is fundamental to Wikipedia research. Wikipedia tries to maintain its neutrality as much as possible, if not impossible. Wikipedia exists only to tell facts, not to judge right or wrong, or to judge truth and falsehood. Neutrality can also be maintained by a number of cooperations and discussions. 2. Interesting point Good faith cooperation is a characteristic that represents Wikipedia. Individuals are among the targets of cooperation on Wikipedia. In modern society, a culture of sharing things, such as a...

W6: How important are contributions of a single individual in the sea of "collective intelligence"? / Park Chan Yonug (박찬영)

1. Opinion It is the individual who creates and develops collective intelligence. Individuals and individuals gather to form a majority, exchange information, and organize knowledge. Thus, individual contributions are essential to creating collective intelligence. One of the important characteristics of collective intelligence is diversity. In order for diversity to be kept, many people's opinions are needed and it must be freely shared. Therefore, many individual contributions help group intelligence develop correctly. Many individual opinions in a group represent diversity. The higher the diversity, the wider the range of information. The quality of information is important in collective intelligence, but the amount of information is also important. 2. Discussion Point Individual contributions are important, but there may be side effects. First, it is a problem when personal information is wrong. Modern collective intelligence interacts very easily and information ...

W5: The Challenges of Consensus / Park Chan Young

 1. Summary Consensus may seem simple enough in theory, but It is not. Consensus is to reach the best possible solution. The focus is on the potential benefits of the agreed outcome rather than the speed of the decision. It is also very important that consensus is not unchanged. People should be open to renegotiation at any time. Also, it is not good to be silent. Silence obscures decisions. In addition, various factors make it difficult to reach a consensus. However, these difficulties make the consensus more enjoyable. Wikipedia believes that the process of consensus can produce good results in the long run.  2. Interesting point Voting is often said to be a symbol of democracy. However, the phrase 'voting is evil' is used in this article. However, It is best to reach a consensus, but it is virtually impossible to reach a consensus when there are more people. For large numbers of people, it is inevitable to use voting in...

W5: Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship? / Pak Chan Young

1.  Opinion The advantage of Wikipedia is that anyone can participate. Free writing and editing greatly help Wikipedia function as a collective intelligence. Censorship and management are exactly different parts. Censorship is the pre-written stage, and management is the post-written stage. In Wikipedia, discussions on the deletion continue. Post-management of incorrect information is a necessary part. However, censorship creates difficulties from the stage of registering information. There are also concerns that such criteria may not be discussed sufficiently. Pre-censorship can also make users who want to share information self-censorship. The scary thing about censorship is that it causes self-censorship. Eventually, many people are reluctant to share information through self-censorship. So, in my opinion, Wikipedia's refusal to censor is essential to function as a media of collective intelligence. I think it is inevita...

W4: What are the pros and cons of using Naver versus Google for research purpose? / Park Chan Young

Summary Naver should approach the portal that includes search and Google as a search engine. Naver's search results are basically sectioned. Naver can be seen as close to the concept of a portal and database of information sharing comprehensive information. On the other hand, Google's search results are simpler than Naver. Most of Naver's search results are Naver services. Therefore, users who search on Naver will use Naver service, and the second search will also stay inside Naver.  Google exposes most search results to other web pages. Users who search through Google will not stay in Google until another search action. Google has a greater purpose in delivering quality contents. Therefore, Naver can be easy to find information that is tied together and Google can help you navigate through various information. Each advantage Google and Naver have will be the other's disadvantage. Interesting point It would be one of Naver's marketing strategies t...

Why is Wikipedia less popular in South Korea? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

I think Wikipedia is less popular in Korea because of the development of various portals and platforms. There is a huge portal called Naver in Korea. Koreans usually use Naver to search. Koreans usually use Naver to search. It will be mainly after entering university that young Koreans use Google to find information. Wikipedia is more accessible when using Google in the process of searching information. However, many Koreans use Naver to search. In addition, as the era of video comes, more and more people are searching through YouTube. People turn on YouTube and watch videos containing the information to find a question or solution to something. Therefore, Koreans use Naver or YouTube a lot as a way to get information. Naver's services '지식-in' also help you get information very easily. Also, trust in collective intelligence seems to be lower than in other countries.  It is hard to say that Korea's tree wiki, similar to Wikipedi...

How do we participate in web 2.0? How do we create the modern-day culture? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

How do we participate in web 2.0? Web 2.0 refers to an Internet environment centered on user engagement that allows anyone to easily create and share data on the Internet without owning or monopolizing the data. Information can be shared and serviced more easily than Web 1.0. Web 2.0 has three characteristics: openness, sharing, and participation. Therefore, we should have these three minds when we participate. It is necessary to share information without monopolizing it, and to engage in a process of collective intelligence with an open mind. Through active participation, it should be shown that it is directly involved in the process of sharing information. How do we create the modern-day culture? Modern culture is achieved through convergence. Different fields meet to recreate a new culture or value. In the case of art, music and literature could meet, or economics and data science could meet in the academic field. In the case of art, music and lit...

What is Wikipedia? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. Summary   Wikipedia is one of the world's most popular websites. Wikipedia is founded in 2001. Wikipedia is free to use. Wikipedia's content is used on a variety of websites. Everyone can write Wikipedia. Forty million people are registered on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia articles should be remarkable. The article should not be biased or personal opinions should not be included. Many references are recommended in the article.   2. Interesting point   It was interesting that Wikipedia's articles were about something remarkable. Notable topics are subjective ones that can vary from person to person. For this reason, articles may be limited, but they may be diversified because different people pay attention. I wonder which of the two will have a greater effect. I think it is the latter.                          ...

W2 : Why Wikipedia? - Park Chan Young (박찬영) LATE POSTING - ADDED

1)  Summary Wikipedia does not generate financial benefits and consists of people's voluntary participation. The collaboration of people who voluntarily gathered develops information little by little. Wikipedia is easy for anyone in the world to access information. It also gave the right to create, modify, and edit data. Because it is made by individuals, Wikipedia's reliability can be questioned. However, misinformation can be corrected quickly because many individuals participate. 2) Interesting point It was interesting that fun accounted for a significant portion of the reasons for participating in Wikipedia. I think this is why Wikipedia can be maintained. There is a saying that genius cannot beat those who try, and those who try cannot beat those who enjoy. It will be a more powerful knowledge warehouse due to people looking for fun in Wikipedia. 3)  Discussion angle One of Wikipedia's characteristics is its openness to anyone's participation. This openness fits th...

W1 : Why are you taking this class? What practical skills do you expect to gain from attending it? / Park Chan Young (박찬영) LATE POSTING - ADDED

Why are you taking this class? There were many times when I got information through Wikipedia. Also, t he power of collective intelligence is very important in modern society.  If we have any questions, we can find the answer without difficulty.  Wikipedia is represented by collective intelligence. I want to participate in a process in which collective intelligence was created by editing Wikipedia and registering new articles.  What practical skills do you expect to gain from attending it? I look forward to using Wikipedia more easily and diversely. Also, since it is an English class, I hope to become familiar with English and improve my reading and writing skills.  When I do my blog assignment, I hope I will have the ability to summarize and pick out the key points.  I want to experience various perspectives through other people's writings. I look forward to expanding my horizons as a result of that.
