About my edits in Wikipedia 2

Summary   https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kim_Se-jeong&action=history The article is about Sejeong Kim who is a Korean singer. I wrote about the TV programs that Sejeong participated in as a guest in the article. And then, my edits were deleted with the reason that people cannot write about guesting in the part of TV program. Also, the person who deleted my edits said it is as per as per WT:KO consensus. Interesting point So I read the page of WT:KO consensus. However, there are too many debates and consensus on the page. I cannot find information about no guesting. Someone needs to reorganize the consensus to find information easily. Also, what I was really confused about is that I can write about guesting in TV programs in Korean Wikipedia. Many Korean Wikipedian write about it in articles. So I thought it is better to understand Wikipedia rules if there are universal rules in Wikipedia that apply in any country. Discussion However, Wikipedia is working based on ...

About my edits in Wikipedia

Summary This Korean article is about Nako Yabuki who is Japanese idol and was a member of Izone in Korea. I put names of TV programs that she starred in in the article. A few hours later, my edits were deleted for no reason. So, I asked the reason why she or he deleted my edits with respect on her or his talk page. She or He said that the information only about Nako Yabuki can be written in the article. What I wrote is the activity of Nako Yabuki as Izone. I understood the reason and then edited the article concerning the reason that my edits were deleted. https://ko.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%EC%95%BC%EB%B6%80%ED%82%A4_%EB%82%98%EC%BD%94&action=history Interesting point I totally did not know the rule that I mentioned in the summary. The reason why I did not know it is that I could not find any page about the rules, especially about celebrities or idols. Articles about idols can be more confusing because they work sometimes as individuals or as groups. Someone needs to make ...

W5 : Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship?

I think Wikipedia's refusal to censorship is justified. It is so important to get information if people want to know it. However, some countries do not let people get information because of their political reasons. If information is not obtained, citizens may not be able to fulfill their right role as citizens in society. Also, people are likely to live as the government tells them to. In order for citizens to live their lives with an independent consciousness, information that is not exaggerated is essential. Moreover, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia which anyone can participate in editing. If Wikipedia accepted censorship, Wikipedia's original meaning pursuing the freedom of people who share information in Wikipedia would get hurt. At least to protect Wikipedia’s dignity and belief, Wikipedia has to reject censorship. Is there anyone who thinks that Wikipedia should not concern censorship? I would like to know your opinion!

W15: What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?

In the course of Collective Intelligence in Practice, I can get to know Wikipedia and directly participate in editing Wikipedia. Before taking this class, I did not know anything about Wikipedia. When I look for what I want to know, I just use news articles and academic papers. So at first, Wikipedia was so unfamiliar that despite Professor Piotr’s classes, I feel Wikipedia editing is so difficult. However, editing 10 Wikipedia articles every week and doing the main project in Wikipedia more and more, I am used to editing articles in Wikipedia. I learned a lot from Wikipedia in the process of getting used to it. I would like to talk about what I learned in Wikipedia from now on. First, I learned a lot of knowledge for my dream job by reading many articles. The reason why I read many articles is actually to know how to edit articles in Wikipedia. However, while understanding Wikipedia rules from other articles, I could accumulate much knowledge. For example, I improved my English speaki...

W14: Korean “Did you know”

Image
In the lecture this week, Piotr talked about the “Did you know” page. After listening to his explanation about English “Did you know” page, I became curious about Korean “Did you know” page. So I read Korean “Did you know” page, “알고 계십니까”. And then, I found a few things to compare. The picture is Korean DYK page, “알고 계십니까”. In English Wikipedia, “Did you know” is a hook which makes people attracted to it. However, in Korean one, “알고 계십니까” is just a title of the page. It is not working as a hook. So the content of “알고 계십니까” is to explain about a subject with a simple sentence, not a question. Also, I read “What is 알고 계십니까” page. It explains about the purpose of “알고 계십니까”, misunderstanding of “알고 계십니까”, how to nominate an article on “알고 계십니까” and so on. So I get to know what the conditions under which an article can be posted on “알고 계십니까” are. It has to be a new article, follow strictly Wikipedia’s rule and have appropriate sources in the article. Actually, I know where “DYK” page in Eng...

W4: What are the pros & cons of using Naver versus Google for research purposes?

Naver is the number one searching website in Korea, but nowadays, Google is one of the most actively used websites in Korea. First of all, I would like to talk about the pros and cons of using Naver for research purposes. When I search something using Naver, I can see a lot of categories about the subject which I want to know in “one page”. Each category contains links and shows the summary of the content in links. Also, Naver has a convenient function that it directly shows me the information, which makes me feel that I do not have to access a link. For example, when I put the word “Ansan Lotte Cinema”, Naver shows me the timetable of today’s movies on that day. Therefore, Naver saves me time when I search the information for research purposes. However, Naver first shows me the information or the articles for advertising purposes. It makes us try to judge what the right information is, not the purpose of advertising. In this way, there are the pros of using Google for research purpose...

W3: Any people can change an article that I made first. How do you feel like that?

I am translating English version of the article into Korean one. So I do not have an article that I made first but I would like to talk about how I feel when someone changes my edits. People who changed or deleted my edits usually give me a reason why they did it. They come to my talk page and explain the reason for me. Or when I see the history of the article, I can see the reason. The reason can be that I did not put some sources of my edits into the article or I did not understand the prevailing rules of Wikipedia edits and made mistakes. Thus, I really feel thankful because thanks to people who kindly explain my mistakes to me, I can learn and understand more about the Wikipedia system. However, someone sometimes deletes my edits without any reason. Moreover, I had an experience where someone told me a reason with an aggressive tone. Every time I edit articles, I do my best. So when my edits are deleted for no reason, I feel a little bit embarrassed. Do you guys have the sam...

W11 : Is quality subjective or objective?

In my opinion, the image quality is subjective.   People have different experiences and feelings in their lives. Their experiences and feelings usually affect their insights and values. So, each person has a different opinion when she or he sees something. Therefore, people assess the quality of the image differently. An image can be of high quality or low quality depending on the person. I think this can be a reason that there are tons of art styles such as Cubism, Abstractionism and so on.   Moreover, the image quality is determined by a certain circumstance. Let me give you an example, Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, which takes information so important. So, when you upload an image in Wikipedia, the image needs to be clear and recognizable to give you a high quality of information. If you upload a blurred and poorly recognized image, the image is necessarily of low quality in Wikipedia. However, this image can be of high quality on...

W10: Who is affected by the digital divide? Can we think of some groups?

Discussion   As Piotr said in the lecture, I also think that the old are more affected by the digital divide than other groups.   Actually, the difficulty of the old about using digital technology is one of the social problems in Korea. Due to Covid-19, “Kiosks” have been installed in many stores and restaurants. Kiosks work especially nowadays because people do not have to face each other to give or get some services. For example, I do not need to see a clerk’s face when I order some food using a kiosk.   However, this useful and safe device is not friendly with the old. The size of letters on a kiosk is usually so small that the old cannot see and use it easily and smoothly. Also, the old usually act slowly. So when they order with a kiosk and some people are waiting behind them, they feel really uncomfortable and nervous. They get only a feeling of helplessness and discomfort when they use digital technology. In the end, the old become far away from digi...

W9 : Do you think Wikipedia is reliable? Why or Why not?

Summary Wikipedia is one of the most famous and popular websites in the world to search information. Many people use the website because they think it is reliable. I also think Wikipedia is reliable so I would like to talk about why I think it is reliable. Discussion As I said, Wikipedia is reliable. Wikipedia has strict rules about reliable sources when people edit articles on the website. It has a few manuals about the rules and people should read the rules before editing Wikipedia articles. One of the rules which I think is important is that when I write a sentence about a certain subject, I have to put a link of a source about information to the end of the sentence. Moreover, the source has to be from articles of professors or well-known news websites because they usually use information which they get their own. Unless I kept the rules, Wikipedia would treat my edits as inappropriate information and delete my edits. Therefore, this is why I think Wikipedia is reliable. Do you agre...

W8 : How important is improved communication for our lives?

Summary Improved communication could be media. Improved communication is television, radio, Internet, social media and so on. In the past, communication was limited because there were not suitable methods to communicate with each other. Therefore, people developed some communication methods, which means improved communication such as alphabet, pictogram, Internet and so on. Now, I would like to talk about how important improved communication is for our lives. Discussion First, I would like to say improved communication is so important for our lives. Communication is a process of sharing one’s opinions and feelings. When people communicate with each other, they get to know other’s opinions and their thoughts become widened and improved. However as I said, in the past, communication was limited because there were not suitable methods to communicate with each other. In this situation, improved communication works. Through improved communication, people can communicate with each other so e...

W8 : What do you find difficult and most enjoyable when editing Wikipedia?

1. What do you find difficult? What I find difficult is what Wikipedia’s editing methods are. I mean in my opinion, there are some usual ways of editing Wikipedia. I had an experience about realizing Wikipedia’s own ways. I have edited an article about one of K-pop idols, ITZY and I thought it was okay to write their birthdays under the names of its members. However, someone deleted my edits about the birthdays so I was wondering why she or he deleted my edits. Turns out, on the list of member’s names, we normally have to write only their names, not other information. Then I realized why my edits were deleted. At first, I did not know the usual ways of editing but as I am used to editing Wikipedia, I realized them. 2. What do you find most enjoyable? What I find most enjoyable is to feel proud of my edits and myself. Whenever I edit some articles and see my list of contributions to Wikipedia, I feel so proud of them. Moreover, I feel a sense of being professional about the subject whic...

W7 : The Review of Good Faith Collaboration

Summary Good Faith Collaboration discusses a community's collaborative culture with Wikipedia. In Wikipedia, many people with a variety of perspectives write and edit articles about various subjects. Anyone can edit the articles so it is so common that several people edit an article. It means that people with different ideologies work in a group in Wikipedia. This collaborative character of Wikipedia presents the collaborative culture in a community. Interesting point and useful points I was interested that in the part of “Patience”, the book says that “Please Don’t Bite the Newcomers”. It stresses that people who are used to editing articles treat kindly and nicely new members of Wikipedia who try to participate in editing. Unless people scold and point out with no respect, new members get scared to participate in Wikipedia works. Therefore, Wikipedia cannot be developed. Discussion I really empathize with the contents of “Patience”. Actually, I had an experience that due to my im...

W6 : Why do people contribute to Wikipedia?

Summary As Professor Piotr said, Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It means that everyone who wants to do it can edit Wikipedia. Many people would like to participate in editing Wikipedia, which is the reason that Wikipedia still runs, but as everyone knows, Wikipedia does not pay any wages for people. However, people or Wikipedian contribute to Wikipedia willingly and gladly even though they are not getting paid. Then, why do people contribute to Wikipedia?  I would like to discuss it before the professor resumes the lecture. Discussion In my opinion, there are two reasons why Wikipedian contribute to Wikipedia without getting paid. First, they like to share some information which they know or explore. After searching information and posting it on the website, they feel proud of themselves and get fulfilled. They like and enjoy this kind of sense of emotion when they share their information. Second, this is my case, people do it because it is their ho...

W2 : After watching Mitch Resnick's TED video

1. Summary   In the video, Let’s teach kids to code , Mitch Resnick explained the importance and the necessity of learning coding for people, especially children.   Children can get lots of things from learning coding. Of course, they learn some skills to code and create something with codes. But they also can think creatively and constructively to create something new. They can learn how to collaborate and communicate with their friends to successfully make new contents together. Moreover, they can get feelings such as pleasure and enjoyment for what they made through coding but frustration and sadness for what they failed to make.   Therefore, Resnick suggested that it is necessary for children to learn coding because coding can be a tool of growing themselves and learning the world. 2. New and interesting thing I learned   I was a little bit shocked about his saying that he disagrees with calling young people as “digital generation”.   I am interested in maki...

W1: Why are you taking this class? / What practical skills do you expect to gain from attending it?

▶ Why are you taking this class?   I am attracted to learning and studying Wikipedia while taking this class.   I currently participate in a club making some news contents and uploading them on Instagram. The purpose of this club is that people could get the information or news more easily through the club's contents. In order to achieve this purpose, I need to get a lot of information about the subject of news so I do searching it hard when I make news contents.   As you know, Wikipedia is one of the most famous and popular websites to get information. I usually use Wikipedia when I want to know the background of an event or an incident. When I found this class, it was so interesting to learn and study Wikipedia which I am familiar with when I make some news contents. ▶ What practical skills do you expect to gain from attending it?   I would like to improve Media Literacy from attending the class.   Media Literacy is the ability to get information from a variou...
