W15: What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?/진신

At the time of writing this blog, I just finished the fifth week of editing. Before I knew it, I had already learned about Wikipedia for 1 semester. Every interface I have edited is the work of my painstaking efforts. I am very grateful that this course allowed me to truly know and understand Wikipedia. Every time the professor replied "excellent", "good job" and "very good", it was my greatest encouragement. Every time they remind me of my shortcomings and encourage me to try more, I have more discoveries about Wikipedia. Views on this course: Because Wikipedia is not available in mainland China, people in mainland China only know that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, but few people actually know about its editor. I am honored to be able to choose and study this course to learn about Wikipedia in my university life. This lesson fully let me grab the charm of Wikipedia. Compared with the theoretical courses, I prefer a practical course. Only through continuou...

W14: After reading “Wikipedia:Did you know”/진신

Summary: The first time I learned about "Did you know?" was when the professor wanted me to add my mainline article here. But unfortunately "Did you know?" there is no Chinese interface. Displayed in DYK are new articles or extended articles selected through an informal review process. DYK showcases new and improved content by presenting a series of facts ("hooks"), some of them accompanied by images, which link to select articles. Thus, to nominate something to appear on DYK, an editor must either write or identify new content and propose an interesting "hook". DYK is only for articles that have achieved one of the following within the past seven days Interesting : "Do you know?" As a part of Wikipedia, it also has its own rules and requirements. And it is a very complete system. "Did you know?" is a new article or extended article selected in the face of an informal review process. So this can be regarded as a more autonom...

W13: After reading “Categorization” / 진신

Summary: Classification refers to the systematic division of articles, templates, user pages, and draft pages in Wikipedia. Every article must be classified. If no relevant category is found, you can create a new category. To create a category, first, add an article to that category. Do this by editing the article page. Add the name of the new category, (e.g.:  [[Category:New category name]]  ), and save your edit. The as-yet-undefined category name will now appear as a red link in the article's category list at the bottom of the page. Next, to create the category, click on that red link, which brings you back into the editor. Adding this new category into the appropriate parent category is much the same as with an article: at the bottom, simply add the parent category (e.g.:  [[Category:Parent category name]]    ), which should usually be a hypernym of the sub-category. Interesting: Because Wikipedia is a huge system. So each category is added and manage...

W12: What is "quality" for our societies? / 진신

I think:  Quality is the comparison between "intrinsic characteristics" and "requirements". A species similar to a cat can only be called a cat unless it satisfies the inherent characteristics of its species (specific marks, characteristics). The quality can only be produced when special requirements are met in the innate characteristics. This is true of everything in the world. Once there is a requirement, quality will be produced, and if there is no requirement, there will be no quality. People surviving in this world, as long as they still have ideas, will make demands on people and things. These demands can be for the outside world or of ourselves. When we make demands on the outside world, we have a criterion for judging the outside world. When we make demands on ourselves, our behavior will be restricted. Quality is broad. For any entity, as long as there are requirements, we can compare the quality. What quality shows is the final result. It integrates eve...

W12: After reading"Wikipedia:Article development" / 진신

  1. Summary:  Every article starts with an idea in the mind of a contributor. You can create articles about anything, as long as they belong in Wikipedia. If you don't have time to write a complete article, you can fill in the "stub" first and then add it slowly. To write a good article, you should start with four parts: research (finding related articles and finding related books) Writing, and Finishing touches. But before creating an article, be sure to confirm whether there is the same article or stub. In this way, you can save resource space and discover existing content, and you can establish good links with other related articles in the future. 2. Interesting:  More pictures, links, and reference materials can be used to add the finishing touch to the article. In addition, remember to create links to your article from related articles and subjects. This includes any redirects your article may need. This helps people find your article and may even help you...

W11: Is quality subjective or objective? /진신

I think:  Subjective quality vs objective indicators. ( references ) Taking photos and videos as examples, the evaluation of photo quality is subdivided into subjectivity and objectivity. For subjective feelings, we can usually measure the quality of the evaluation index itself based on the accuracy, consistency, stability, and monotony of the prediction. The so-called accuracy refers to the similarity between subjective evaluation scores and objective evaluation index scores; consistency refers to that it should not only perform well for certain types of videos/images but should perform well for all types of videos/images; stable; Sexuality means that the value of each evaluation of the same video/image should be the same or the error should be within the acceptable range; monotonicity means that the evaluation score should show a corresponding single increase or decrease as the MOS score increases or decreases. From an objective evaluation point of view, we usually use nume...

W11:After reading "Commons:FAQ"/진신

1. Summary  Get a comprehensive understanding of 'Wikimedia Commons' by reading 'Commons: FAQ'. Simply put, 'Wikimedia Commons' is a media library created and updated by volunteers. It is used to store freely licensed graphics, diagrams, animation, music, spoken text, video clips, and media of all sorts that are useful for any Wikimedia project. (But not including text and it is not possible to upload mobile apps suitable for teaching or demonstrating concepts.) However, please note that you must not copy and paste text to these other projects unless you are ready to release it into the public domain or license it for use under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike (CC BY or CC BY-SA) licenses. For example, to use text from a website—even your own—that external website must exhibit a clear statement of such public domain release or CC BY-SA licensing. 2. Interesting It looks as though any photo, video, icon, or animation that I have taken can be uploaded ...

W10: Is internet addiction real? Are we addicted to the internet? / 진신

I think : In the era when the Internet was only beginning to prevail, I believed that Internet addiction was real. But in today’s society, I Don’t think we are addicted to the Internet. Although there are many places where we need to use the Internet in our lives, our use of the Internet is increasing. Nowadays, we have network coverage wherever we go, whether it is in the subway or the cabin in the sky, there is the ubiquitous Internet. The emergence and development of the Internet are the change of time. When we were 18 years old, there was a popular saying, ‘give me a room with plenty of food and internet. I can stay in this room forever. ’Since the Corona outbreak in 19 years, we have indeed met all the needs in buzzwords, but the buzzword Corona Blue has also emerged in this society. We are more yearning to go outdoor with a few friends. We live in the Internet era and enjoy the convenience brought by the Internet. This is what the time should be, and we cannot stop the developme...

W10: Who is affected by the digital divide? Can we think of some groups? / 진신

I think that the digital divide is not the elderly, but they need. In the digital age, our lives have been surrounded by the Internet, but these things are still happening in invisible corners. (example) ‘ an activity center refused to participate because the elderly’s mobile phones could not scan the health code (the QR code of the corona test results in China in Corona environment).’ ‘an elderly person bought snacks for his grandson because he paid for it in cash, and was told by the cashier not to accept cash (according to the data, the penetration rate of mobile payment in China is the highest in the world. Alibaba pay, WeChat pay and other mobile payment software is popular in China)’ While the continuous development of digital technology has brought the rapid advancement of the entire society, it has also left a deep "digital divide" behind. For a long time, the social ecology established by the rapid development of the Internet has made it impossible for some people, ...

W10:Can we think of some example of how internet has changed our culture? / 진신

In my opinion, the biggest change the Internet has increased to us is that cultural and educational resources have been maximized and popularized.Everyone can express their knowledge and thinking about the world, and the cultural pattern in the past that allowed the minority to lead the majority has disappeared. For example, in ancient China,  Oral information dissemination methods are very unreliable. Therefore, there are many false biographies of ancient characters, which have been proved in the Internet age.most people heard biographies of celebrities from ‘storytellers’. But in the Internet age, the right to absorb culture and think about the expression belongs to the public, and should not be monopolized by a few people. However, this trend is another consequence, that is, no one can lead this era in thought.  I have always felt that the generation born after the popularization of the Internet will be more confident and courageous to face the objective world and answer thos...

W10:After reading Free culture movement and Remix culture / 진신

Summary: Remix culture is a term describing a society that allows and encourages derivative works by combining or editing existing materials to produce a new creative work or product. A remix culture would be, by default, permissive of efforts to improve upon, change, integrate, or otherwise remix the work of copyright holders.  For remix culture to survive, it must be shared and created by others. This is where participatory culture comes into play, because consumers start participating by becoming contributors. The Domains of remixing includes Folklore and vocal traditions, Graphic arts, Books and other information, Software and other digital goods, Music, Film and video,GIFs,Fan fiction, and Remixing in religion. I nteresting point: With the development of the time, remix culture has once again entered our vision. In the two-way era of Internet 2.0, we also seem to need the existence of remix culture. But this will be like Kirby Ferguson said in his TED talk the three ...

W9: Do you think wikipedia is reliable? why or why not?/진신

I think: Relating to the credibility of Wikipedia, Wikipedia thought of this question when Wikipedia was founded. Wikipedia culture stipulates that entries must be ready for verification and have reference sources. This reference source can be papers, books, periodicals, newspapers, TV news, and even online media, etc. BBS posts, blogs, and Weibo are not reliable sources. Probably because the former is responsible for editors to check, and will not make mistakes easily. Even if they make mistakes, their colleagues will correct them, which greatly reduces errors.  However, the threshold of Wikipedia content is for verification, not true and correct. In Wikipedia, I often see editors accusing others of “just trying to cover up the truth”. But the accusers may not know that the content added to Wikipedia needs to be published in a reliable source and can be checked by readers, and it cannot be established by us alone to be true. Wikipedia editor PhiLiP once said, "Don't try to cha...

W9: What makes information reliable?(Thoughts after reading Wikipedia:List of hoaxes on Wikipedia)/진신

I think: The number of content references can also explain the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the entry explanation to a certain extent. Wikipedia further guarantees accuracy by encouraging editors to add sources of information for discourse points and forcing articles to include more detailed references. Wikipedia provides that the evidence must be a credible publishing house. For example, journals and books published by university presses, university-level textbooks, magazines, periodicals, books published by renowned publishing houses, and mainstream media. On the other hand, the content of websites that represent personal opinions such as forums and blogs are regarded as unreliable sources and prohibited from being included. First of all, let’s talk about Wikipedia. The Wikipedia is not reviewed and the content is refreshed in real time.Whether the updated content can be retained for a long time depends on the source of the information is sufficient and verifiable. Whether the r...

W8.2 Why Wikipedia is the most efficient of all attempts to collect and organize? / 진신

Because every entry of Wikipedia needs to be verified by a reliable source. Coupled with the constant dedication of tens of thousands of powerful volunteers, Wikipedia is the most efficient of all collection and sorting attempts. Not all entries in Wikipedia are highly efficient. Some of the hotspots that have attracted everyone’s attention are prone to produce a lot of feelings, because Wikipedia attaches great importance to the verification of content, any subjective remarks will soon be treated as original research, and high-quality content is in this way. It was born out of babbling and being killed as an original research What is the most important function of Wikipedia for you?

W8: Reliability of Wikipedia/진신

Summary ‘ Wikipedia:Reliable sources ’ describes what reliable sources can be used in Wikipedia articles. How to use these reliable sources correctly. Or which articles are unreliable and cannot be used. Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources, making sure that all majority and significant minority views that have appeared in those sources are covered. Articles should be based on reliable, independent, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. This means that we publish the opinions only of reliable authors, and not the opinions of Wikipedians who have read and interpreted primary source material for themselves.  Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.  Interesting Breaking news point: It is better to wait a...

W7: GFC book notes By 'William S. Kowinski' , 'Cory Doctorow','Piotr Konieczny' and 'Paul Youngquist'/ 진신

Summary- William S. Kowinski: The true exception is the innovative success of a collaborative effort that has prime online reference work called Wikipedia. This book is not meant to be biography or reportage, but contemporary ethnography or study of a culture. What this book does well is describe how Wikipedia works and what issues have arisen.  It's short on drama and personality, and so it's probably destined to be a source document. Since that seems unlikely, this may remain the best opportunity for learning about this remarkable project. Summary- Cory Doctorow: Reagle makes an excellent case that this assumption of good faith is particularly powerful when it comes to dealing with those who lack good faith — it creates positive outcomes for arguments with everyone from neo-Nazis to political hacks who're whitewashing their boss's entries. Wikipedia's most fascinating and unprecedented aspect isn't the encyclopedia itself — rather, it's the collaborative cu...

W6: "Encyclopedic Anxiety", "A Globe in Accord" /진신

Encyclopedic Anxiety Summary   Over time, the average quality of Wikipedia articles rises, but Wikipedians’ standards rise more quickly. — OpenToppedBus’s First Law.  The higher the standards that Wikipedia aims for, the more that Wikipedia will appear sub-standard to the outside world. — OpenToppedBus’s Corollary. This article describes contemporary criticism from a historical perspective: Wikipedia, like other references before it, has caused greater anxiety about technological and social change. This raises the question of whether Wikipedia represents new forms of content production that are changing the role of individuals, the characteristics of cultural products, and the authority and viability of established cultural institutions. The problem arises because somehow to indulge their themes and sources. A popular perspective on the reference work is the biography of the people who create them. The range of personality types spans a spectrum ranging from noble self-improve...

W6: How important are contributions of a single individual in the sea of "collective intelligence"? /진신

Through Clay Shirky's speech " Institutions VS.collaboration ", his predictive speech described how closed groups and companies will be replaced by loose systems. In this loose system, small devotees play a big role, and flexible collaboration will replace strict planning. Via video: Every group is made up of individuals. Only the gathering of small dedication can produce "collective intelligence". Wikipedia depends on the Internet. We often worry that social media platforms will quickly "fall" as the user base rapidly expands. The reason is that the content of these products does not exist or it is difficult to form a "solidified" theoretical consensus, which is accepted by new users. Therefore, every new entrant may raise the old question again. As a result, a lot of repetitive and meaningless content is produced, which dilutes the density of high-quality content.  Wikipedia was born to solve this problem . Each "item" is the con...

W6: Who do you think edits Wikipedia? /진신

Summary Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It opens to everyone who uses the Internet. By understanding who has contributed a lot to Wikipedia, we can see that the participation rates are different by gender and age. At the same time, the usage rate of Wikipedia in Western countries is higher than that of Asian countries. Passing data: the editorial page ratio of people 40 or older is 28%, 19% of people aged 30-39, 26% of people aged 22-29, 14% of people aged 18-21, the population under the age of 17 is 13%. It can be seen that the main editors of Wikipedia come from people 40 years old or older. At the same time, in the 2011 Wikipedia Edit rate survey, 91% of the editors were  men. Interesting It can be viewed on the article that the contribution of women in the 20s to Wikipedia is minimal. With the development of the Internet, people aged 20 to 39 have a higher usage rate of the Internet, but those who make more editors for Wikipedia are th...

W6:Why do people contribute to Wikipedia? They are not getting paid... /진신

Wikipedia is a "free encyclopedia" and also a "free encyclopedia". It has always maintained the promise of "free to everyone", no capital, no advertising. Wikipedia's income comes from charitable grants and user funding. Last year, Wikipedia raised 120 million U.S. dollars in "charity", of which more than 85% came from spontaneous personal donations. [1] The mission of Wikipedia is to transfer all the knowledge of the world to everyone in this world in native languages.  The sole purpose of the Wikipedia community works together to create this free and highest-quality encyclopedia. Wikipedia knows its own philosophy and essential purpose, and ensures that everything it says and does be true to this philosophy. What makes a product power is not its scale and strength, but it's culture, a kind of solid value and beliefs. Only when individuals trust this culture or organization, they will be prepared to take personal risks to promote the ove...
