W14: Did You Know?

  1. Summary Wikipedia has millions of editors, more than the population of many countries. They make numerous articles. So, there is a section ‘Did You Know’ on the main page for promoting new quality articles. DYK(Did You Know?)’s goals are showing new-various contents and acknowledging the contribution for Wikipedia. To be nominated on DYK, the article must be met several criteria. For example, It must be at least 1,500 characters long and meet Wikipedia's policies. Of course, advertisement or a collection of general trivia cannot be nominated on DYK. 2. Interesting or New Point I wondered who updates the ‘Did You Know’ section’s content. After reading this article, I was able to resolve the question. I thought this section seemed like a kind of advertising banner. Because it informs some of the content of the article who want to promote it through copywriting. 3. Discussion Point Have you ever clicked on the DYK link? If yes, what attracted you? If not, what was the reason? I h...

W13: The importance of Organization

Summary The texts on this week describe some of the Wikipedia’s efficient tools, Category and List, Navigational Template. Like the Internet is called a sea of information, there are a lot of information on the internet. However, most of them are poorly organized, we wastes a lot of time finding quality information. Wikipedia also has this problem. When you ask in natural language(ex: How's the COVID-19 confirmed trend?), Wikipedia cannot answer. So, Wikipedia is striving for a better analysis. One of the examples is organization tool: Category and List, Navigational Template. redirection is a blank page but send the reader to another article. or section of an article. For example, when search "kpop" in the Wikipedia, it redirect to "k-pop". disambiguation is used when there are several homonyms. For example, "Right" can be interpreted as both the kind of direction and idea such as human rights. Redirection and Disambiguation are not error. They c...

W12: quality and peer review

Summary The video “Understanding Wikipedia: Advanced editing or how to write high quality content” and The Article “development page” explain article's grade and how to develop article. Good article's criteria is like that: Well written, verifiable with no original research, Broad in its coverage, Neutral, Stable, Illustrated(if possible, by image). There are sub-criteria for this. For example, to meet 'Well-written', you have to complies with the style guideline for layout, words and etc. Featured article is the high-quality article in Wikipedia. It joins an exclusive group of featured content which is showed across various pages. Wikipedia aims for a perfect article, but there are not perfect. Perfection is always goal. It gives some tips for selecting article, finding relevant article, researching and other procedure for writing articles. Following this article, we can find free online resource on Google Scholar and CORE, BASE. Moreover, we can contribute by...

W11: Free culture, common images and other media

Summary In this week, I learned about one of the umbrella project Wikipedia, 'Wikimedia Commons(short form "Commons")'. It is the media repository for freely licensed photographs, animations, musics, video clips and more. Like Wikipedia, Commons also operates through people's contributions. In Commons, the media is graded. Featured media and quality media are that. Featured media is the most high quality media. It must meet several criteria: high technical standard, resolution and more. The standard for quality media is weaker than that for featured media. One thing to consider is 'quality' is a socially constructed value. What used to be high quality turns into ordinary things over time, and sometimes vice versa. Interesting Point I learned several licenses in an open source software class. I was interested in the stories about licences in the F&Q document. One more thing I was interested in is the way photographers use Commons. Because numeri...

W10: Topics in Sociology: Internet

Summarize This video covers several sociological topics related to the Internet. Digital divide, censorship, Internet addiction, copyright and privacy things like that.    Interesting Point What I was interested in watching this video was difference between countries. For example, In countries (Japan, Korea, etc.) where there is a culture that is reluctant to reveal private parts to others, personal information leakage is considered the biggest problem. However, In other countries, exposure to harmful content is considered a big problem. The thing to consider is, this video uses data from about 5 to 10 years ago. In 2020s, how did these statistics change?   Discussion Point Many public services in South Korea are done assuming that people are using Internet services. For example, when visiting restaurants, we are naturally required to check-in via Kakao Talk or Naver to prevent COVID-19. As if everyone has a cell phone and uses the Internet. Do you think that access to ...

W9: Reliability and verifiability

Summarize Anyway, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, reliability and verifiability are core values. Is Wikipedia is reliable? Sometimes the answer is yes However sometimes the answer is No. Lots of studies gave conformed Wikipedia’s reliability is as great as other encyclopedias. But, vandalism and attack is always exist. Moreover lots of contributors write only what they interested in. Bias or wrong information can exist always. So, this video suggest some ways how to make more reliable Wikipedia. First, please use reliable source. We should have consider four areas to assessing the reliability of the reference: type of the work, creator of the work, publisher of the work. age of the work. Too old work has high possibility of obsolete and Unupdated information. Self-published book has low reliability like personal blog. Second, it is important to distinguish between facts and opinions. This rule can be access to any sources. Even news or academic paper, both opinion an...

W8: The Pursuit of the Universal Encyclopedia and History of Wikipedia

Image
Summarize Since ancient times, people have been attempt to collecting and transmit ting information for themselves and their next generation.  https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Timeline_of_communication_tools.jpg#/media/File:Timeline_of_communication_tools.jpg Like this image, from papyrus to Wikipedia, the latest techniques of each era used for transmit and share information. This desire for knowledge resulted a growth of information. Enlightenment intellectuals mainly driven this movement. The spread of the internet has changed the flow of knowledge. Encyclopedia Britannica, the famous encyclopedia, is nearing bankruptcy because people switch to Wikipedia. Why do people write Wikipedia without any profit? Clay Shirky coined a term Cognitive Surplus. New items what I learned Cognitive Surplus is the term what I’ve never heard before. This concept means current people learned how to use their free time more constructively-especially the advent of online tools for new fo...

W7: Good Faith Collaboration Book

  1. Summary Good Faith Collaboration: The Culture of Wikipedia is a book about Wikipedia community and Wikipedia. The main point of GFC book is that Wikipedia is a community which is based on good faith collaboration. Wikipedia is maintained by a great number of anonymous people’s good faith. The concept ‘Good Faith’ seems vague and difficult to realize. Therefore, Wikipedians make some rules and guidelines. This book deals with them(for example, NPOV) and how it actually works. 2. Interesting&Useful Point It is difficult to create an encyclopedia based on good faith(in fact, it’s hard to even write a single article). As the author mentioned, it will be surprising if Wikipedia and Wikipedian community has disappeared and   there were only traces left. However, Wikipedia and its community are still alive, even this book was written 11 years ago. This miracle shows good faith’s power. Moreover it tells that some restrictions are needed to make a great result based on...

W6: Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship?

Summarize Wikipedia is not a dictionary, it is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia doesn't contain all data on the internet. Unlike the motto of Wikipedia is “Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.” The targets for deletion are as follows: nonsense, advertising/spam, vandalism, copyright violation/plagiarism, … Moreover, there are some rules in Wikipedia. Wikipedia avoid original research, promotion, mass collection of information.   Interesting thing I am interested in the basis of advertising/spam. At the root, writing about something maybe promoting the object. The reason for writing in the open space is to inform it. I thought it might be difficult to distinguish between well-made advertisement and Wikipedia article.   Discussion Point-Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship? I think a certain level of censorship is necessary. The word ‘censorship’ already contains negative connotations. So...

W5: After reading the video and aritlces

 1. Summary The Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a soap box, dictionary, newspaper, storage. So, understandin the scope of Wikipedia is important. If don’t mind it, your article or contribution can be deleted. Every Wikipedian has right to recommend articles to delete and to debate. Although, due to problems such as homonyms, collision can occur. Like this case of disambiguation deal with present link list or etc. The article “The Challenges of Consensus” describe the history of Wikipedia’s effort for consensus. What seems trivial can also be a problem in the community. However, sometimes we need a dictator in power to restrain a man who spoils an agreement. The article “The Benevolent Dictator” comments on leadership within Wikipedia’s co-founder Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales’s story. They had different view of Wikipedia and leadership. This article gives a positive assessment of Wales and describe the leadership elements he had. 2. Interesting Point Wikiped...

Week 4: Good faith collaboration / Jeong Hyeon-su

1. Summarize I read “Good faith collaboration”. This article explain Wikipedia’s policies and guidelines in more detail than the previous article. The concepts used in Wikipedia(ex: NPOV) have ambiguous by words alone. So, it explain what this word means in Wikipedia. For example, neutral point can be interpreted in various ways. According to how to interpretation, the way of keeping neutrality can be different.   2. Interesting items what I learned The index card’s using way was interesting. It said the index card(red link)is useful way to saying my requirement. I didn’t think I can require something by the red link. After reading it, I considered the index card can be a way to prove demand of information.   3. Discussion point Before the previous blog, I wrote the NPOV blocks minority’s activity in Wikipedia. But after reading detailed explanation in this article, my mind is little bit changed. But there is still some question. NPOV means equal respect for all ...

Week3: Nazis and Norms

1 . Summarize Wikipedia is not only the encyclopedia but also one of community. To be honestly, the encyclopedia page of Wikipedia what we can see is snap-shot of community's conversation. So, Wikipedia is affected by faith. The good faith preserves and develops Wikipedia. The bad faith-for example, Neo-Nazi-ruins Wikipedia. The gender distribution of wikipedian is worthly to note. According to the preliminary report of a Wikipedian survey(in April 2009), respondents were predominantly young males. The NPOV means Neutral point of view. This policy takes an epistemological stance that recognizes all different perspectives even it is right or wrong.   2. Interesting items what I learned In this text, I am interested the Neo-Nazi’s attack in 2005. It is not surprising that such an attack existed. But during Wikipedia discussion by prompted by them, no one compared anybody to Nazi or Hitler. It is surprising. Everyday, I see someone comparing their opponent to the Nazis. Even tod...

Week2: Why wikipedia now?

Summarize Why learn Wikipedia now? The lecture video of this week is answer to this question. We already know part of this answer. Wikipedia is not only a website but also a culture. This unique online dictionary is based on people’s Voluntary and good faith. Most of wikipedians edit wiki for hobby. So, understanding Wikipedia is understanding urban society.   Provided   texts are preface of book that written by markdown and published for free. This book is about collaboration in Wikipedia. I couldn’t get the details because of lack of content.   mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items Until now, I didn’t think that open source and creative commons are relate in Wikipedia. Even if there is always marked ‘cc’ bottom of Wikipedia page.   identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle I took a break from school last year. During that time, I went to various cities of korea. In august, I lived in chuncheon for working at c...

Week1: Why are you taking this class? / What practical skills do you expect to gain from attending it?

∎ Why are you taking this class? Because I want a SOCIOLOGY class. This year is my last year at hanyang univ. I want to take the sociology class as many as possible. But in this semester, there are really few sociology class for my major, information sociology. So I choose this ‘ Collective intelligence’ class. The second reason of taking this class is that I am interested in various Wikipedia. I use Wikipedia almost every day. There are uncountable information on the web, . It is useful. However, sometimes it disturbing find useful information or taking too many time. In this case, Wikipedia helps me. I wonder why many people use their time for editing Wikipedia. And more, I am interesting various wiki(like namuwiki, femiwiki). Some people create wiki site in a certain viewpoint in korean web. Why they do that? What kind of people use this site?   ∎ What practical skills do you expect to gain from attending it? I expect to gain wiki editing skill and wiki l...
