W15. What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is the assignment different from more traditional student assignment? Is it more fun?

"Collective Intelligence" class was a bit different from the classes I've taken so far. In most of the classes, the professor unilaterally explained the concept and we took a test. However, this class gave us a sociology class related to collective intelligence and made us write down my thoughts on the subject. In addition, we selected two articles related to currently hot issues, and interpreted them, and uploaded at Wikipedia. Unlike previous classes, it required my active participation, so it was hard but fun. Through the Wikipedia assignment, I realized the importance of copyright and learned responsibility for my post. I didn't know much about Wikipedia, but from now on, I will use it more.

W14. Do you Know

Summary Did You Know hook data of Wikipedia gives the hook text (fact) and the related links? Articles for DYK must conform to the core policies of verifiability, living person biographies, and copyright. Nominations should be rejected if an inspection reveals that they are not based on reliable sources, violate WP BLP, or have problems with the loose paraphrasing or copyright violations of images and text. Also, the facts mentioned in the hook must be cited in the articles. Each fact in the hook must be supported in the article by at least one inline citation to a reliable source. Interesting Point I think it's a good device to keep quality articles from being shunned. Discussion Have you ever used Wikipedia's DYK service?

W14. The new power of collaboartion

Summary Howard Rheingold is one of the driving minds behind our net-enabled, open, collaborative life. As Howard Rheingold himself puts it, "I fell into the computer realm from the typewriter dimension, then plugged my computer into my telephone and got sucked into the net." A writer and designer, he was among the first wave of creative thinkers who saw, in computers and then in the Internet, a way to form powerful new communities. His 2002 book Smart Mobs, which presaged Web 2.0 in predicting collaborative ventures like Wikipedia, was the outgrowth of decades spent studying and living life online. An early and active member of the Well (he wrote about it in The Virtual Community), he went on to cofound HotWired and Electric Minds, two groundbreaking web communities, in the mid-1990s. Now active in Second Life, he teaches, writes and consults on social networking. His latest passion: teaching and workshopping participatory media literacy, to make sure we all know how to read ...

W12. What is quality for our societies?

There are many definitions of quality. Some are more related to objective facts while others to more subjective feelings, but they are interdependent. In addition, every quality expert defines it in a different way depending on their environment and criteria. Quality could be defined as a basic tool for a natural property of any good or service that allows it to be compared with any other good or service of its kind. The word quality has many meanings, but basically, it refers to the set of inherent properties of an object that allows satisfying stated or implied needs. There are a number of qualities for our societies, but I think a clean environment is essential for the quality of our lives. The marine ecosystem must be cleaned up for animals and the literally ‘environment’ must be cleaned up to address serious global warming. Of course, the environment in these areas is important, but it can also be applied to the Internet environment. Censorship should not be done on Wikipedia, and...

W10. Who is affected by the digital divide? Can we think of some groups?

Digital Divide is a newly coined term first used in the United States in the mid-1990s. This digital divide contributes to the individual's social and economic divide. As digital becomes more common, people who utilize it properly increases their knowledge and income, while those who do not use digital do not develop at all, which means that the gap between the two classes widens. Recently, the problem of the digital divide has been further revealed due to Corona virus. In the early days of Covid-19, there were people who bought masks from online shopping malls and people who could easily get them as soon as they came out, while strangers on the Internet had to go and buy them in person. The price of masks rose, and those who went early in the morning to wait or walk-in vain were the digitally vulnerable social group, most of them are elderly. How should seniors live in such a digital society? It will take some studying to lower the inconvenience of everyday life, and at least not ...

W10. Can we think of some example of how internet has changed our culture?

I think online comments changed our culture a lot. Comments mainly express individual opinions. Therefore, under the online news, there are endless individual opinions about the contents of the article. Again, other individual opinions about the endless opinions run in the form of replies and comments. In democracy, "public opinion" is the most absolute basis, and many of these stacked opinions have begun to be regarded as a kind of public opinion in the democratic society of the online age. At major hearings, lawmakers came to regard it as the "voice of the people," referring to related comments. Of course, the limitations of online cannot be absolute public opinion, but at least online individuals can form 'opinion' more actively than previous generations. Recent comments do not hesitate to criticize reporters or writers as well as content content. This is because most of the people have very extensive knowledge, and unlike journalists who write long sente...

W10. Is internet addiction real? Are we addicted to the internet?

I think Internet addiction is real and kind of dangerous disease and many children are exposed to the danger of internet addiction. In particular, there are many primary other problems with excessive Internet use by children and adolescents. Until elementary and middle school students, attention deficit and distractions are very likely to be the reasons for their immersion in the game. You may ask back if you can't even play games if you're distracted, but you can understand if you think about the mechanism of your brain. If you are careless and distracted by a lack of attention, it is not easy to actively maintain concentration. Therefore, it is difficult to concentrate actively on reading books or solving problems, so I get tired quickly or turn my attention away. TV or games, by the way, require only passive attention to counteract the stimulus, so it's much easier to stay focused.

W10. Remix culture

Summary Remix culture, sometimes called literacy culture, is a society that allows and encourages derivatives by combining or editing existing materials to produce new creations or products. Remix culture basically allows for efforts to improve, alter, integrate, or remix copyright holders' works. Combining elements has always been a common practice for artists in all domains throughout human history, but the increase in monopoly copyright restrictions over the past few decades has increasingly restricted this practice due to legal cooling effects. In response, Lawrence Lessig, a Harvard law professor seeking to remix desirable concepts for human creativity, has been working on transferring remixing concepts to the digital age since the early 2000s. Lawrence founded Creative Commons in 2001 and re-released the license as a tool to revitalize the remix culture. The remixing culture of cultural works was inspired and deeply related to early free and open-source software that encourag...

W8. What do you find difficult and enjoyable?

Actually, I took a class ‘Globalization Sociology’ last semester, so I felt much more comfortable at editing Wikipedia articles. However, the subject I’ve chosen was not that familiar to me(Maker culture, Stereotype Threats), so I spent lots of time translating the article. I’m not really satisfied with my work, but I tried my best. Discussion Which one do you like better, translating an English article to Korean, or a Korean article to English?

W9. Do you think Wikipedia is reliable? Why or why not?

I think Wikipedia is not that reliable. Actually, I usually get information from Naver, Google, or professional term paper. Through the system that a nyone can access it, information without expertise can also be introduced, so I just simply look up from Wikipedia when doing my assignment.

W6. Who do you think edits wikipedia? the young, the old, male, female, Americans, Koreans..?

In terms of gender, the male edits Wikipedia more. According to a 2011 study, "90 percent defined themselves as male, 9 percent female, and 1 percent as transsexual or transgender." Also, it found that 9% of Wikipedia's modifiers are women and 91% of men. This study says the number of female contributors is steadily increasing every year. However, a 2009 Wikimedia Foundation survey claimed that the proportion of female editors was less than 14 percent, indicating that fewer women were modifying Wikipedia. Also, in terms of age, I can’t find scientific data, but I think the young more work in Wikipedia. Because their internet accessibility is much higher, so they feel easier to write or edit articles.

W5. Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship?

Wikipedia is the most ‘free’ encyclopedia, so many people should be able to participate comfortably. That’s why there should be no censorship of the content. In fact, Wikipedia continues to fight with censorship. The Chinese government has a filtering system called the Great Wall, which automatically blocks search results that are considered anti-government or harmful information. China has tried to apply it to Wikipedia, but Wikipedia has expressed strongly not to give in to the Chinese government's censorship of the Internet. Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal in 2013, "Wikipedia will never respond to the Chinese government's request to restrict information." This is for human rights to enjoy knowledge and educational opportunities.

W6. How important are contributions of a single individual in the sea of 'collective intelligence'?

I t is often seen that the public solves problems that are difficult for individuals to solve and works together to find answers. The simple fact that two are better than one person and several are better than two is the basic law of collective intelligence. Therefore, I think that the role of individuals in collective intelligence is more important and responsible than when working alone. Also, I think individual creativity has a positive effect on collective intelligence. Personal creativity is defined as the ability to generate new and useful ideas or to combine existing ideas into new and useful ideas. It consists of expertise, creative thinking skills, and intrinsic motivation. This creativity is considered educable in recent years, and it is seen as a result of collective activities rather than individual activities and is achieved through team activities that achieve goals within a certain period of time.

W3. Why Wikipedia less popular in South Korea than in most other developed countries?

In Korea, I think the reliability of information is important when doing assignments or papers. Since Wikipedia allows even non-experts to write articles, the credibility of information is often questioned in Korea. Also, there seems to be a lack of publicity for Wikipedia. When I asked my college friends, most of them didn't know exactly what Wikipedia is or how to get information. That's why they tend to use Naver or Google, which is more friendly and comfortable. I think that Wikipedia should be explained frequently and accessible in universities.

W4. What are the pros and cons of using Naver versus Google for research purposes?

Summary Living in the Internet age, we often rely on Internet search rather than books to find a lot of information quickly. Google and Naver are the most frequently used portal sites to find information. Google always offers optimized guides for search engines, actively opening and helping in various efforts to expose top search rankings. It is also said that opinions collected from customers are collected and reflected in search algorithms, reflecting at least thousands to as many as tens of thousands a year. However, I don't pay much attention to customer care. Google-related tasks require patience in dealing with answering machines first. On the other hand, Naver's biggest advantage is its real-time system. It is best suited to the characteristics of Koreans. However, in recent years, real-time surge search keyword services have disappeared. Also, Naver has often been censored and unable to upload content without realizing it. Interesting point Through this subject, I reali...

W3. Any people can change an article that I made first? How do you feel like that?

When I first started editing Wikipedia, I thought it would be annoying to have someone fix my material. Because I also spent a lot of time doing my research, and it was an article that I uploaded afterward, so it felt like my efforts were being denied. However, I could understand and feel better about my improving article when they explained that they modified my text page for some reason. However, sometimes, there were some people who fixed my information without any contact. I hope everyone will keep manners on Wikipedia and create a healthy encyclopedia environment.

W3. How do we participate in web2.0? How do we create the modern-day culture?

The Empire of Culture, triggered by Web 2.0, is a country where stories are communicated. Stories are the way many people live, the emotions and opinions of life. Communication means that people produce their own stories and consume others' stories. This tool of communication is 'writing'. I can hold a microphone and tell my story, or face to face and listen to other people's stories. But now that kind of communication doesn't work. This is especially true for generations who don't have dry ink on their diplomas. Today's generation can't stand a day without the Internet. It is a generation that communicates better with friends by messenger and communicates better by texting than by phone. Even if you don't read books, all kinds of blogs go around and search. He is more familiar with online media than anyone else. In the younger generation, "writing" is the most economical means of communication. Writing, an analog work, has become more im...

W2. What is Wikipedia?

Summary Wikipedia is a kind of revolution of the encyclopedia. This is because everyone, including me and my friends, can provide information and modify the contents presented. Interesting Point People tend to use Wikipedia, which is freely modifiable. However, there are some differences in the interest among many countries. Asian countries, especially Korea, are relatively less likely to use it. Discussion In Korea, most people think that lots of information from Wikipedia are 'not that reliable'. I also don't use contents from Wikipedia in doing official assignments or papers. In that case, is Wikipedia worth an encyclopedia?

W2. After watching Mitch Rensnicks' video

Summary I can summarize his philosophy like: 1. Experience in expressing oneself with technology is more important than using technology simply. 2. Learning a particular concept through code is a good way to learn in the process of creating the desired project. EX) To inform a child who wants to make a scoring function of a variable function. 3. SW education is worth learning for all students because it can develop a variety of universal thinking skills that do not just stay in "computing." - Many key principles of design - How to experiment with new ideas - How to bring complex ideas and cut them into simpler parts - How to work with others on a project - How to find or fix a problem when things are not going well - How to persevere and persist in the face of frustration when things don't go well Interesting Point Actually, I’m not good at doing something with technology or computer, so I learned a lot from his lecture. I thought studying or socializing with friends on...
