W2) What is Wikipedia and Why Wikipedia is Popular /박채정, PARK CHAEJEONG
Mission impossible: Wikipedia
Twenty years ago, we went to the library and looked into encyclopedias to find proven materials. Or we used to search keywords on online websites for related articles. It was just that much. Until Wikipedia was created.
Of course, Wikipedia was not perfect from the beginning. However, after 20 years of trial and error, Wikipedia has quickly become one of the most popular websites in the world. As the penetration of laptops and smartphones has expanded and become more digital, Wikipedia's value has grown. Wikipedia makes it easy to find the information we want anytime, anywhere quickly (wikiwiki), and it is highly accessible because all the data is free.
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that we can write, modify, and share ourselves. In other words, isn't it the platform of collective intelligence? I think it's a very interesting point of view.
Q. Why is Wikipedia the most popular reference/website?
A. Unvalueable: Wikipedia
As I said earlier, Wikipedia is for free. Neither the author nor the modifier gives any compensation to anyone. However, people are actively participating in Wikipedia. Why? Because Wikipedia's activities are invisible to us, and they are no different from giving us numerous rewards.
Wikipedia has a slightly different "research" nature than traditional websites. Therefore, when I need to find reliable materials such as journals and papers, then the process can be more deeply immersed in the information I want to find, or it can improve my search capabilities. In addition, because we communicate with many people, we can naturally develop a respectful and caring attitude toward the other person.
B. Open Collaboration: Wikipedia
Most existing websites can get information one-way. But for Wikipedia, I can be the author myself, modify and share. Even if it starts with a single line of articles, it can be a completed article filled with rich content by many people in the future. More value learning, and "Everyone's Making Together (Open Collaboration)" I think this is the distinctive point and advantage of Wikipedia. Also, that's the reason why it is recognized by people.
