W3 : What does the comic 'Wikipedian Protester' mean? (extra blogging)

'Wikipedian Protester'

Wikipedia : A major influence on culture

Wikipedia's influence and protection from abuse

1) Wikipedian Protester

This comic is a representation of how Wikipedia users resist within the Internet world, Wikipedia. It contains politicians making political remarks on the podium and people protesting against politicians' remarks with a placard saying "CITATION NEEDED."

In addition, the tooltip of this comic mentions the sentence "SEMI-PROTECT THE CONSTRUCTION". This is a representative phrase of Wikipedia's semi-protection policy.

2) Wikipedia : A major influence on culture

I think this comic shows the world of Wikipedia in a humorous way, which requires credibility by adding citation to every statement. In other words, If you can't agree with a particular sentence in the Wikipedia article, and it doesn't contain a citation , you will express opposition by tagging it "CITATION NEEDEDED."

Furthermore, the comic shows a political situation and I thought about the reasons for setting the subject of politics among many areas. And the reason I think is that is to reveal the need for reliable and responsible statements in the political speech these days. In other words, it can be understood that it is satirizing the unreliable politicians of today. What's interesting is that the additional statement on the tool tip is "SEMI-PROTECT THE CONSTRUCTION," which represents Wikipedia's semi-protection policy. The semi-protection policy is a kind of editorial protection policy that emerged to prevent indiscriminate misinformation, which also prevents destructive information materials and sometimes reduces the amount of editing by preventing relatively free editing.

So, this comic criticizes today’s political situation by expressing citizens who express opposition with the term "citation needed" and politicians who restrict speech with semi-protection policies.

The fact that it is expressed in comic and consumed by humor reflects the current situation in which everyone can understand this kind of humor because Wikipedia permeates the whole culture and has a huge impact. In other words, this comic is the result of influence of Wikipedia on culture.

3) Wikipedia's influence and protection from abuse

"Semi-protection policy", I mentioned above, is a policy designed to restrict the production of destructive information with malicious or misinformation. Besides this, what else would be good if Wikipedia was to come up with a new way to protect Wikipedia and its readers from misinformation and malicious editing at this time of growing influence?

  1. Your point of view has refreshed me. I personally think that Wikipedia's "semi-protection strategy" has other benefits: Then there will be people who will not deliberately do damage, but edit with a neutral point of view. Then the neutral point of view will enable people who read Wikipedia to see the beautiful side of the world.
