What is Wikipedia?

1.Summarize

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia opened in 2001. Wikipedia's contents and various information can be shared with all users. And Wikipedia is a large website in globally, with about 40 million accounts. It is not known if all of them are continuing to participate in editing, but it was found to be very large. Wikipedia relies heavily on users as all of these users can modify and edit contents. Also, it is free of copyright and can be used without permission when using the content. Therefore, we need to respect each copyright more.

2. An interesting point I learned

I checked the list of popular websites among the attached materials related to the class, and through Alexa, I was able to learn about the usage rate of Wikipedia in Korea and the United States. In the United States, Wikipedia was ranked 8th, but in Korea, it was 12th, out of the top 10. Wikipedia's popularity in the United States was interesting, and I was curious about how many people use it. In this regard, while doing an Internet search, I came across an article titled'The number of edits in the English version of Wikipedia, exceeded 1 billion times'. In this article, the time and editors were revealed, and it was a little fun to take it meaningfully. The fact that the number of edits is 1 billion times is a large number that honestly does not come to me. This article gave me a feel for the popularity of Wikipedia in the United States.

3. Discussion angle – Why is Wikipedia less popular in South Korea than in most other developed countries?

Personally, I think the Korean portal site, “Naver,” has had a great influence. People used Naver's “지식iN” a lot as one of their collective intelligence. 지식iN is used a lot in the way that publishers post and answer questions. 지식iN can also post and reply to all Naver users, and get answers to questions in real time. Also, since the editing method is not complicated, I think that the collective intelligence was utilized through Naver, which is a little more familiar to us. I'm curious what others think is Wikipedia is less popular in South Korea.

  2. I read your story well! It was interesting to note that the popularity of Wikipedia is relatively low compared to other developed countries based on Naver '지식iN'. In this regard, while I was looking for data, there is an article that caught my eye and I want to share it with you.

In the article, it is said that the establishment of Wikipedia's database was considerably slower than that of the fast Internet environment in Korea at the time, and the advantages of Wikipedia were relatively invisible because 지식iN was already named as a synonym for collective intelligence in Korea.

I was curious about the launch timing of these services, so I searched Wikipedia. As a result, the first launch of 지식iN was a pilot operation in September 2002 and officially launched in October 2002, whereas the Korean Wikipedia was on October 11, 2002. Therefore, it seems that 지식iN was more recognized by people.
In conclusion, I think as people used familiar 지식iN, they naturally neglected Wikipedia which was a similar category.
