Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship? / Kim Yoon(김윤)
I think the right level of censorship is also necessary in Wikipedia.
In any community, there are people with really diverse tendencies. And it is true that such diversity makes the community richer and more active. Sometimes, however, some people try to cloud the democratic atmosphere of the community. Every time that happens, some other people become aware of the wrong facts. If these attempts continue, the community becomes a space overflowing with lies. The same is true in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is highly accessible and open-minded space, so people of various nationalities, races, political ideologies, and cultures can approach, write, and discuss. Wikipedia is a structure in which anyone can write to Wikipedia if they receive relevant training, have own accounts, and know how handle tools. Also it is simultaneously disclosed and connected. Some people sometimes write articles that are not fact-based, aggressive, and have a lot of incitement. Without a device to censor them, the Wikipedia ecosystem will continue to be polluted.
Therefore, it is good for Wikipedia to advocate such things as high openness and accessibility, but I think minimal censorship tools are needed to the extent that they do not harm democracy and freedom. The rest can be corrected by healthy community citizens through discussion and communication.
