W5 : After reading "The Benevolent Dictator" / Suyoung Han
The Benevolent Dictator
1) Summary - Uncomfortable but necessary dictator
This chapter explains the need for a
dictator in the open community through episodes on Wikipedia. Jimmy Wales, one
of the founders of Wikipedia, had been thinking about an administrator on
Wikipedia. Through the various anecdotes in the article, it can be seen that he
wanted to manage Wikipedia using a mix of types of autocratic, consultative, and
delegated leadership. The author looked at these efforts with interest, and
evaluated that it was worth noting that the open community was using
authorities variously.
Through a series of situations, the
writer has used a metaphor for the word “Benevolent Dictator” to people with
authority in an open community such as Wikipedia. In addition, the author
expressed the opinion that the dictator within the open content community is
disparate, but that it is essential for intervening and preventing external threats.
2) Interesting Point - Humor: the tremendous effect behind simplicity
I found it interesting in the material
that humor can also be used in leadership.
Through my major class, I learned that
advertisements appealing with humor can reach consumers without burden. Therefore,
from the previous learning, I knew that humor can be a good tool, but this is
the first time I know that it can also be used in leadership. Also, I learned
that using humor within a team does not awaken a spirit of challenge for
authority, but can relieve anxiety.
From this material, I learned a lesson
that humor should not be considered simple and that it can be used in various
fields.
3) Discussion point - Authority's apology
What do you think of the authority's
apologizing?
In the material, Jimmy Wales is an
authority, but he himself wanted to be kind through various interactions, among
which he was willing to apologize, and this caught my eye.
In the class called Crisis Strategy
Communication, which I have heard before, apology is the most effective
strategy, but in fact, apology is not used well in Korea.
I'm curious about what you think about
the reason, and how you feel when you receive apologies from authorities.

ReplyDeleteOh, Suyoung! I read your opinion well. It was an opportunity for me to realize once again that humor can play various roles. I think the reason why the government doesn't apologize is because of 'responsibility avoidance'. This is because the government should take responsibility for the mistake as soon as the government apologizes. They always seem to make a way to run away.So when the government apologizes, it makes me think, 'Do they really apologize sincerely?' Of course, if the government did a lot of trustworthy things, I would think they were sincere in their apology.
