1. Summary

This article comments on leadership within the open content community through the story of the co-founder of Wikipedia. The founders of Wikipedia were Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales, who had great influence on Wikipedia. They had different values ​​for Wikipedia and leadership. In particular, Wales had patience, civility, humility, and a willingness to apologize when approaching people.

In open content communities, all users can edit, so everyone should have an equal sense of responsibility. Therefore, I think a benevolent dictator like Wales can do better than someone's strong coercion. In addition, I think that the practical problems that can occur on Wikipedia and the vision of Wikipedia should be balanced with gentle leadership.


2.  An interesting point I learned

As mentioned in this article and in the previous article (the puzzle of openness), I felt that Wikipedia seems to be an important issue in maintaining a balance in leadership and openness as well. I think it is difficult to maintain an appropriate balance between leadership and freedom/openness. However, isn't it that Wikipedia's growth is because its balance has been well maintained so far? Also, I think this may be because many people who edit Wikipedia take responsibility for editing.


3. Discussion angle

I think humor is also important to leadership, as shown in this article. That's because proper humor makes the mood good. But I think humor is an additional element in leadership. I think that for good leadership, factors such as excellent insight, judgment, and determination must precede. What elements do you think are necessary for good leadership? Humor is also an important element of leadership, but I think humor is just one of the ways to communicate with team members. Of course, it would be nice to be humorous, but it would be more important to listen to new opinions and not lose team's goal.
