W5 / Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship? / Jeongyoon Oh(오정윤)

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is one of the strongest opponents of Internet censorship. Before Wikipedia's service in China, the Chinese government said Wikipedia should be pre-censored by Chinese government. However, Jimmy Wales also argued that Wikipedia cannot allow censorship even if it does not make inroads into China. I think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship. There are two reasons for that.

First, censorship is very subjective. Censorship is often done for the benefit of a particular group, not for objective or public reasons. In 2019, there was a case where Wikipedia itself was blocked from accessing Wikipedia in China ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Incident. Censorship often exists for the benefit of authorities.

Second, many existing sites are already being censored. Various news and newspapers as well as search sites are being censored by the government and high-ranking officials. If Wikipedia, which users create together, is censored, it will lose freedom of expression and users' participation will decrease. Since censorship is often not a convincing reason, articles should be written freely without censorship in Wikipedia, which operates on a user-based basis.
