Why do people contribute to Wikipedia?

Shinhee Kim

People like to show off their knowledge. Essentially, people are social animals, and they like to discuss and talk with others. Being able to freely express one's opinions while sharing information within Wikipedia can make people feel satisfied. In addition, people can feel rewarded through the act of sharing knowledge without paying any material price. The idea that he has contributed to society makes people feel that they have become better people. We can feel a good sense of accomplishment through Wikipedia.
If you think about one other reason, I think it is because people's desire to correct misinformation. We often want to correct the wrong facts or unfair cases even though they are not directly related to me. This mindset is the driving force behind Wikipedia's contribution and virtuous cycle.
So what characteristics do people with mainly modify Wikipedia? We checked statistics that men rather than women and lower age groups modify Wikipedia in class. I'd like to discuss what characteristics of their activities are compatible with Wikipedia.

  1. Shinhee, I had similar questions as you, and I saw the comments you left on my post. I was interesting in your opinion that the characteristic that men may enjoy more dealing with computer can affect the editing rate. I was curious about this topic and did some research. According to one material, gender imbalances persist, and men's favorite topics are much more within Wikipedia than women's interests. This also seems to be affecting the Wikipedia editing rate. Since this is a topic that women are not interested in, isn't it that the rate of participation in editing is low? I think Wikipedia will have to figure out the exact cause of the problem and keep trying to solve this problem.

  2. Shinhee, the reason why Wikipedians participate in Wikipedia you mentioned is refreshing. It is impressive that the happiness that comes from showing-off is the reason. I totally agree with that. That is the only explanation for the activity in an open space where no compensation is given. The desire to be recognized, which is human nature, appears. I also participate in Wiki editing these days and feel undefined rewarding, which is likely to be explained by what you mentioned.
