W6 / Why do people contribute to Wikipedia? They are not getting paid... / Jeongyoon Oh(오정윤)
There are countless reasons why people contribute to Wikipedia. The lecture also showed 11 reasons why people contribute to Wikipedia. I would like to explain why I contribute to Wikipedia among 11 reasons, and why I write Wikipedia articles for that reason. The reason why I contribute to writing Wikipedia articles is because I knew the topic that was poorly explained in Wikipedia.
I am not a person who is pleased with the act of informing a lot of people. However, it is different in the field I am interested in (I often have professional knowledge because I study in detail in my area of interest.). Because when my area of interest is explained insufficiently in Wikipedia, someone is interested in this field, and Wikipedia doesn't have proper information, so I'm worried that he or she will eventually give up interest in it. For example, this is the Wikipedia topic I wrote last year about Zero Waste. After reading a book that excessive use of disposable products is a problem and environmental pollution becomes serious due to unnecessary packaging waste, I have been to various zero waste shops in Korea. I wanted to study the origin and ideology of zero waste, but Wikipedia had little information, and eventually I had no choice but to study zero waste in other ways. But some people don't think about looking deeper into zero waste than Wikipedia, so they'll lose that interest quickly. I'm worried about that, so I think I contribute to writing Wikipedia articles.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience. Of course, I think that people who contribute to Wikipedia for free are more people love. Love to share their knowledge, love to share with the group. Because people are high-level animals that belong to the group.
