W10 Can we think of some examples of how internet has changed our culture?

Shinhee Kim

The Internet has brought many changes in many ways. In particular, in terms of culture, I think it has brought about tremendous changes, and the most influential change is the blurring of borders between countries. We can also view and participate in culture in any country through the Internet. On the Internet, there are few temporal and spatial restrictions. Therefore, the time difference and distance from other countries are not a problem. Platforms like YouTube are used by people all over the world, and anyone can find the video they want by simply searching. That is why videos made in Korea are not famous to Koreans, but there are also ironic situations where they become famous among foreigners.

Due to the influence of the Internet, Korea's K-POP was also able to grow very much. Many people can browse the stage of K-POP artists on the Internet, and even enjoy online concerts in any country through a real-time streaming service. In this way, the Internet spreads many cultures, and sometimes various cultures can be mixed to create new cultures.

In this way, the Internet has had various positive effects, but there will be drawbacks behind it. So, what are the disadvantages of the Internet in terms of culture?

  1. I read your opinion about the advantages of the Internet well. I think digital crime can be an example of the disadvantages of the Internet. As the Internet has changed and developed, people can share their opinions regardless of time and place as you said. However, some people use this advantage in a bad way. For example, they post anything even if it is not true or somebody can hurt because of the post. Also, they commit sexual crimes such as sharing some pictures of someone without someone’s approval.

  2. The Internet cuts off offline communication! I think we don't have to talk face to face because we can easily reach each other anytime, anywhere. I mean, you're gonna have to maintain that shallow, broad network. And I feel like I'm losing time to think about something. Rather than meeting together and talking about something, will time pass by just watching contents based on algorithms...? I think thoughts and opinions often evaporate easily. I also think they tend to look for fun and easy information.
