W10 / Can we think of some products or industries that have been disrupted by the internet? / Jeongyoon Oh 오정윤

I'm sure my peers have had the Internet since they were born, and they've been using it easily in real life. Therefore, it is not easy to know what life was like before the Internet. However, as the Internet grows more and more advanced, there are certainly three products and industries that have decreased in demand.

First, it is the dictionary. Before the Internet service, there had to be a real dictionary book for the meaning of words and study. Despite its heavy weight, dictionaries were indispensable when studying. In Korea, it was difficult to find a house without a dictionary. However, with the spread of the Internet, we have Internet dictionaries like Wikipedia, and now we can easily find the information we want to find. A paper-book dictionary was losing its old status.

Second, the phone book. In the past, people wrote down all the phone numbers they needed or called through phone books. But now I can find out the number if I type the store or company I want on the Internet, so I don't need a phone book anymore. The difference is that the dictionary I mentioned earlier exists but rarely is used, but the phone book does not exist at all and is not used at all.

Third, the video industry. In the past, people had to rent videos from video stores for a fee to watch animations or movies. I actually saw a few when I was in elementary school, but now most of them are gone. Currently, movies can be viewed over the Internet and kept permanently through files. In addition, movie subscription services such as Netflix allow users to view countless amounts of content. Those are the reasons why the video rental industry has disappeared.

  1. I feel similar because I'm in the same generation as you! Until I was in elementary school, I could see people using dictionaries, phone books, and videos, but now I can't see them well. Maybe as smartphones became popular, there was no reason for people to use them. And I expect that if electronic devices such as iPads become more popular, stationery such as notebooks and writing instruments will soon disappear.
