W10: Who is affected by the digital divide? Can we think of some groups?

Discussion

As Piotr said in the lecture, I also think that the old are more affected by the digital divide than other groups.

Actually, the difficulty of the old about using digital technology is one of the social problems in Korea. Due to Covid-19, “Kiosks” have been installed in many stores and restaurants. Kiosks work especially nowadays because people do not have to face each other to give or get some services. For example, I do not need to see a clerk’s face when I order some food using a kiosk.

However, this useful and safe device is not friendly with the old. The size of letters on a kiosk is usually so small that the old cannot see and use it easily and smoothly. Also, the old usually act slowly. So when they order with a kiosk and some people are waiting behind them, they feel really uncomfortable and nervous. They get only a feeling of helplessness and discomfort when they use digital technology. In the end, the old become far away from digital technology.

In spite of their difficulty about digital technology, it is difficult for the old to get an opportunity to learn how to use digital devices. As they grow older, they live in a narrower range (they usually do not work or go to school), so there are few opportunities to learn new technology. Thus, the old have no choice but to experience the digital divide.

Therefore, the social problem about a kiosk is the reason why I think the old are more by the digital divide than any other groups.

How about you guys? Who is affected by the digital divide? Let me know your opinion!

  1. Hi, Soyeon.
I've thought the same thing as you before. I think it's a problem that anyone can get about the digital divide. Nevertheless, I also think that older people receive a more serious information gap in this area. For general reasons, it's the same as what you said. A case in this point is the 'kiosk' you mentioned. My friend's grandfather also said that he gave up trying and called in a clerk to order it because it was too difficult to order it in kiosk. The digital technology you're talking about is actually changing rapidly, even as we have to keep up with the changes. How much stranger and more difficult would this change be for the elderly, which is unfamiliar to us.
