W11: Free culture, common images and other media

Summary

In this week, I learned about one of the umbrella project Wikipedia, 'Wikimedia Commons(short form "Commons")'. It is the media repository for freely licensed photographs, animations, musics, video clips and more. Like Wikipedia, Commons also operates through people's contributions. In Commons, the media is graded. Featured media and quality media are that. Featured media is the most high quality media. It must meet several criteria: high technical standard, resolution and more. The standard for quality media is weaker than that for featured media. One thing to consider is 'quality' is a socially constructed value. What used to be high quality turns into ordinary things over time, and sometimes vice versa.

Interesting Point

I learned several licenses in an open source software class. I was interested in the stories about licences in the F&Q document. One more thing I was interested in is the way photographers use Commons. Because numeric people see Wikipedia project, Commons can be great billboard for promoting their photographs. For that reason, the 2021 Wiki Loves Monuments competition in Wikimedia Commons has been officially recognized as the World’s largest photography competition.

Discussion Point

I think Wikimedia Commons is important project as Wikipedia. This is because there is definitely a meaning to the media, which is a form other than text. What do you think about it?
