W14. Wikipedia: Did you know / Jung jisoo
1. Summary
This material (Did you know) is intended to introduce information that is not well known to the public among the articles created on Wikipedia. DYK has five goals: continuous improvement/extension, insight into data, and presentation of facts on various topics.
There are rules to nominate something to appear on these DYKs. It must be a new document created within 7 days, the articles must be long enough, and it must be verified that the content of the article is present in the document. And articles about DYK must comply with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, such as copyright, and review the requirements.
On the other hand, general quiz collections or articles written for advertising or publicity are not DYK, so Wikipedia editors should be careful about this.
2. Interesting point
Looking at the 'history' section of this material, we can see that DYK first appeared on the main page on February 22, 2004. I could feel that DYK was not originally created when Wikipedia was created, but was a function created by people's needs and convenience as they edited and used articles on Wikipedia. As it was made so that people could see more diverse and expanded articles when viewing articles on Wikipedia, I felt it was an additional feature created by editors using Wikipedia, so this part was interesting to me.
3. Question
In order to be nominated as DYK, there was a fairly firmly established rule. As a simple question, why does DYK of Wikipedia only accept the latest articles?
Jisoo, I read your article well. Thank you for your always good comments. Let's talk about some of the discussion points you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteThe reason Wikipedia's Did you know should be up-to-date is that Wikipedia creates new articles every day.
If you select DYK even in old articles, it will not be too restrictive. So there is a risk of duplicate review because all the articles that are supposed to have appeared in the DYK review.
