W3. Why wikipedia less popular in South Korea than in most other developed countries?

Wikipedia is less popular in South Korea than most other developed countries. What is the reason? Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia based on collective intelligence that allows anyone to freely post information and modify and supplement existing content on the Internet. There are problems because it is a system that even non-experts can participate.

The biggest problem is the credibility of information. Wikipedia is quick to update content that attracts public attention. Therefore, it is often left unattended with old or incorrect information. Wikipedia’s credibility is low because the more current the information is, the more reliable it is. Also, someone intentionally uses fake news as a means of spreading it.

For this reason, Wikipedia's perception is not good among Koreans. For example, if someone says Wikipedia is the source of the assignment, their colleagues laugh. Although Wikipedia has the right information and is differentiated from other encyclopedias, koreans dismiss it as a completely unreliable dictionary.

How can I change the perception in Korea? First, when Wikipedia adds or edits content, it requires the source of the information to be attached as an official site. In addition, the last editor must update the update date to ensure that information is not left unattended for at least one year. As encyclopedias we make together, we must participate diligently and soundly.
