Q. Why Wikipedia less popular in South Korea than in most other developed countries?
I think, Naver has a big influence in South Korea
Naver is a representative information search site in Korea. Since I was young, I have used Naver only, and I have been writing various communities, cafes, and blogs on Naver, so I will not look for other sites other than Naver. Naver's scalability is currently No. 1 in South Korea. Businesses such as shopping, webtoons, radio, and messenger are expanding infinitely. Of course, Naver also has weaknesses. That is the reliability of the information. Naver tends to have low reliability of information because it is so large. Blog posts are also difficult to believe because they are being advertised, and contents of "Naver Knowledge-In" cannot be verified for their reliability. Wikipedia has a strong competitive edge in that respect. This is because many people continue to verify reliability by writing and correcting information. Currently, many discussions are underway on the reliability of information on Naver. Currently, Naver's main screen has changed to only display the search box like Google and organize its own contents.
I think this is an important crossroads. If Naver can even build the credibility of information now, more people will use Naver as it has been. Otherwise, I think there will be a lot of people flocking to highly reliable sites like Wikipedia.
