W2 : After watching Mitch Resnick's TED video
1. Summary
In the video, Let’s teach kids to code, Mitch Resnick explained the importance and the necessity of learning coding for people, especially children.
Children can get lots of things from learning coding. Of course, they learn some skills to code and create something with codes. But they also can think creatively and constructively to create something new. They can learn how to collaborate and communicate with their friends to successfully make new contents together. Moreover, they can get feelings such as pleasure and enjoyment for what they made through coding but frustration and sadness for what they failed to make.
Therefore, Resnick suggested that it is necessary for children to learn coding because coding can be a tool of growing themselves and learning the world.
2. New and interesting thing I learned
I was a little bit shocked about his saying that he disagrees with calling young people as “digital generation”.
I am interested in making some content such as videos and journals through some computer programs. So I thought all young people use technology and create something through technology. Turns out, there are some people that are only used to chatting, searching, and watching some videos. They do not get used to expressing themselves through technology. While thinking about Resnik’s saying, it came up in my head that some friends of mine are always using their phones and laptops but they are not for creating something.
Therefore, I understand the reason why Resnick is skeptical about calling young people as “digital generation”. I also agree with his opinion based on my experience.
3. Discussion
I know things are changing as time goes on. It is why children need to learn how to code. Also, I understood the importance and the necessity of learning coding for children from Mitch Resnick’s story. But why should it be coding? I mean that there are many other ways to improve creative thinking and learning the world. I think posting and editing Wikipedia are also the way on behalf of coding.
