W2 : After watching Mitch Resnick’s TED video
1. Summary
Speaker Mitch Resnick is the developer of Scratch, where you can learn coding. He emphasizes the importance and versatility of coding education, starting with the story that children made "Mother's Day" cards using Scratch coding.
2. Something new or interesting
After watching this video, I solved the misunderstanding about coding. I've always recognized the need for coding education, but I turned away from coding because I don’t become a coding expert. However, the speaker says that the reason for learning coding is not to become an expert, but to think systematically and to promote collaboration and creativity. I agree with him. Beyond simply learning coding, learning coding leads us to develop in a better way than when we have not learned it. There is a saying, "There is a big difference between knowing and not knowing.” When I studied coding and could make use of it, I became firmly convinced that I could see a bigger world.
3. In-depth perspective
The speaker questions whether young people are "familiar" with many technologies, but are proficient. I thought deeply about the required subjects we learn in college through this question.
Living in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, we are closer to technology than ever. It occurred to us that coding could be an essential part of us, not an optional part. As China's influence grows, we are learning Chinese as a second language and an essential subject.
In the same vein, coding is an essential part to study regardless of major, living in an era where the influence of technology is great.
I've seen 'Toy to Learn Coding' at a supermarket. When I was young, Barbie dolls were lined up in the mart and were essential toys. Could the day come when a toy learning coding becomes a must-have toy? If coding is essential for young children, college students who receive higher education cannot help knowing Coding. I think it's time for deep discussions to take place on whether to reflect coding in necessary education at Hanyang University.
* Toy to learn Coding
I also had an experience of seeing toys in the image of your writing in the mart and thinking a lot. When I was young, 'Kongsooni' was just a toy to play with. With that, we, human beings, developed social skills through role-playing and had a part that helped us grow along with play. Now, the 'Kongsooni', played by a 5-6 year-old child, teaches coding to children. With the development of IT technology and the growing demand in the field, I couldn't help but think a lot about teaching coding to people even when they are young.
