W3: (Extra credits) Thoughts after reading "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" 1 - Preface

 ● Thoughts on Reading "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" - Preface

In the preface, Erving Goffman pointed out the main issues discussed in the book "Self Presentation in Daily Life", its research purpose, and the theoretical framework used, and the source of citations. Introduced the logical idea of frame deployment. At the same time, it also explains the difference between theatrical performance theory in the field of stage art and the field of real life.

1Explore the problem, research purpose, use the theoretical framework, and cite sources.

The introduction part completed three tasks. It is Goffman's abstract framework summary of the content of the entire book. It also gives definitions to the concepts involved in some of the issues to be discussed next, For example, "interaction (encounter)", "performance", "character in the play", "routine procedure", "consistent operation", etc. Finally, in the introduction part, Goffman explained the themes discussed in the book and the misunderstandings that readers tend to fall into.

2) Have a deeper understanding of the drama theory.

There is a certain cognitive basis for the drama-like theory. First, I analyze from two perspectives, namely the different perspectives of the performer (actor) and the audience (witness).

From the perspective of the audience, for an object to be observed, or people tend to list a person in front of them as the object of observation, they always want to know his information. Of course, the result is to try to make one's own behavior in line with the other party's psychological expectations.

Starting from the performer, the performer will express himself in a way that is beneficial to him.

From this process of interaction between the two, performers will suppress their true feelings and thoughts to a certain extent, and express them in a way that they think the other party will accept. And the other party will also cooperate. This kind of "expedient measure" is "operations consistent".

3) problem: "given" expression and "expression" expression.

When reading "expression", it has "given" expression and "expression" expression. It is difficult for me to distinguish what is the difference between them?

This book makes me feel very deeply, so I will continue to read it, and see you next time.
