W3. What is Wikipedia - KIM Yujin

1. What is Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a kind of ‘FREE CONTENTS’ encyclopedia that anyone around the world can edit. It is the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet. Anyone with Internet access may write or edit articles on Wikipedia, and they can choose to contribute anonymously, with their pseudonym or real name.

Being editable by anyone means that it may be easily damaged or contain content that should be deleted, and this is why there is Wikipedia's policy on document damage. It is common for documents to become cluttered and then corrected. Also, Citation is important and needed.

There are more than 290 languages. The value of Wikipedia is counted in billion dollars, yet it’s given away for free. Almost 10 thousand articles are added each day.

2. Interesting point

Through this week’s lecture, I first learned about QRpedia. QRpedia is a mobile web system that provides Wikipedia documents to the readers using QR codes. The QR code can be created simply by using a URL, but QR Media has added other features to it. Users can read Wikipedia articles in their language of choice.

The QR media was first conceived by Roger Bamkin of Wikimedia UK, and was created by Terence Eden and released in April 2011. Currently, QR media is used in museums in the UK, the US, and Spain. The program source code of QR Media is freely available under the MIT license.

The QRpedia server uses the Wikipedia API, finds the Wikipedia document in the language desired by the user, and returns it in a format that is easy to view on the mobile. If there is no corresponding document, QRpedia allows the user to choose a different language or Google Translate. In this way, QR feeders can provide the same document in multiple languages even if the museum does not directly translate it.

3. Discussion Angle

Korean Wikipedia was founded in 2002. It’s a kind of long-standing website, but Wikipedia is less popular especially in South Korea than in most other developed countries.

In my opinion, there are so many useful websites for Koreans to find some information. To be honest, I usually use Naver(지식인, blog, ~) or academic journal when I’m doing my work. Also, these days, we can share and access lots of information through YouTUBE. That’s why there is no need for us to rely on Wikipedia.

Comments

  1. The usage rate of Wikipedia in China is likely to be lower than in South Korea. Let me post what I consider to be the reason for this phenomenon. Because Wikipedia in China can be Browsed but not edited. This is the biggest feature of losing Wikipedia. Since the birth of Baidu Baike (Chinese Encyclopedia website). This makes Baidu Baike one website the largest encyclopedia platform in China.
