W4: (Extra credits) Thoughts after reading "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" 2 - ‘the back region (behind closed doors)’


When I read the front region part of the first chapter, I skipped directly to the third chapter to read it. It turns out that the stage itself can be divided into the front region and the back region according to the different functions. So talk about my thoughts on the back region (behind closed doors).

1) Summary

Although the back region is no longer part of the performance itself, it is still part of a complete performance. The back region is very important for "work control". This can be proved by the Shetland Islands hotels, radio broadcasting, the "boundary wall" in architectural design, or the examples of dignitaries. The problem of back region control is widespread. 

The back region control is also subdivided into different areas: work area, entertainment area and activity place for biological needs. The performer can get rid of the role in the back region to get a chance to relax. For example, the maid in the kitchen can cross her legs in spite of the image of the woman, and the doctor can chat in the break room without being serious. But back region doesn't mean absolute freedom. One is that in some cases there is still a need to maintain image back region, after all, the theater can also be seen as another performance system from a micro perspective. Second, mutual encouragement in the back region is the affirmation of the front desk. In addition, some of the identity divisions that are imposed on each individual also affect the degree of freedom in the back region.


2) New knowledge learned 

Although people tend to label one area as the front region or the back region, many areas in this time and meaning as the front region, and in another time and meaning as the back region. Performers are allowed to have "small movements" in the back region, which is also in line with the characteristics of "regression" in the field of psychology. For example, the private office of a senior executive is undoubtedly the front region, and here, he can take off his coat, loosen his tie, and talk intimately with his colleagues at the same level. At the same time, by creating a back region atmosphere, one person can turn any area into a back region. For example, on an under-crew night flight, flight attendants may sit at the rear of the cabin and chat with one or two passengers after performing their initial duties.


3) problem

If there is no obvious boundary between the front region and the back region, will there be problems with the impression management?
