What are the pros and cons of using Naver versus Google for research purpose?

1. Summary - pros and cons of using Naver versus Google

Actually, I use Google more than Naver for data research. The reason I use Google is because there are a lot of specialized materials and a large amount of data. I think this is Google's strength. In particular, I think it is advantageous when reference materials for various countries are needed due to various foreign materials. However, I think there is a disadvantage that it takes a lot of time to find the data I want as the data are vast.
The disadvantage of Naver is that there are many posts that are less reliable due to low-quality blogs or cafes, and there are many things that contain some unnecessary information, which wastes time. On the other hand, the advantage is that it is Korea's own site and is used a lot, so it is familiar. I think it would be a little more convenient to do a simple survey because it is familiar and adapted to domestic users.

2. An interesting point I learned

Thinking about the strengths and weaknesses of Google and Naver, I wondered how much each site has grown. So, through a site called INTERNET TREND, I looked at the market share of search engines in 2020. The market share in 2020 was about 59% for Naver and about 32% for Google. On the other hand, when looking at the data for 2018, Naver recorded 67% of market share and Google recorded 23%. In just two years, I could see Google's growth of about 10%.
As Google is a very large site, I did not expect Naver's domestic market share to be superior, but it was interesting that Google's market share was increasing very quickly.

3. Discussion angle

Nowadays, I think that not only Google and Naver, but also YouTube are used a lot for data search. I also search for data through YouTube in order to find it easier and simpler. I would like to talk with you about whether Youtube can grow into a platform for data search purposes, not just to enjoy video content.

Comments

  1. Jisoo, your discussion point is interesting. As you mentioned, YouTube has now grown into a huge media outlet. Also, many people already look for data on YouTube.
I think it's actually hard to get reliable information from the "content" of YouTube videos. However, it may be possible to analyze YouTube content itself, in other words, trends and flows of YouTube content, and use it as a new database after secondary processing. As YouTube users have increased exponentially these days, the utilization is expected to be very high.

  2. I think YouTube is also likely to grow into a search platform. Over the years, the rapid growth of YouTube has led to more people getting information through YouTube.
Unlike when I was young, there is a saying that elementary school students search and get information through YouTube!
I think the more generational the change, the more people will use YouTube as a search platform.

  3. I read your good interesting discussion topic! I think YouTube has already become a platform for search to the new generation.
In fact, according to the '2019 NPR' survey, 60% of those surveyed said they searched for information on YouTube. In particular, about 7 out of 10 of the top 10 Internet users responded that they use YouTube as a search channel, and the behavior of using YouTube as a search channel is expected to continue expanding, especially among the younger generation.
Seeing this, YouTube has expanded from the area of video content consumption to the area of search.
