Week2: Why wikipedia now?

 

Summarize

Why learn Wikipedia now? The lecture video of this week is answer to this question. We already know part of this answer. Wikipedia is not only a website but also a culture. This unique online dictionary is based on people’s Voluntary and good faith. Most of wikipedians edit wiki for hobby. So, understanding Wikipedia is understanding urban society.

 

Provided texts are preface of book that written by markdown and published for free. This book is about collaboration in Wikipedia. I couldn’t get the details because of lack of content.

Until now, I didn’t think that open source and creative commons are relate in Wikipedia. Even if there is always marked ‘cc’ bottom of Wikipedia page.

I took a break from school last year. During that time, I went to various cities of korea. In august, I lived in chuncheon for working at chuncheon commonz field(for multiple interpretation, they use ‘commonz’ instead of commons) for 1 month. In this time, I leaned the ‘commons sprit’. I understood commons as a share that no one had a monopoly. Can Wikipedia be called commons? If answer yes, the reason is what?

 1. Summary  The Internet has changed our culture so much. First, through the Internet, we can meet people regardless of distance. People in each country communicated over the Internet and reduced the barriers to distance by creating relationships. Also, the Internet has let us stay away from books. When we want to find expertise, we can get it from Wikipedia or Google. Even information in books can be obtained through e-books, reducing access to libraries and paper books. 2. Interesting point Further to the above, our brains are gradually degenerating because we don't have to remember information. W15 : What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?  The most important thing I learned from editing Wikipedia is the joy of participating in collective intelligence. Before the class, I only used Wikipedia. But I was given the opportunity to edit Wikipedia through class. It is difficult than I expected to edit a steady every week. But I was pleasantly able to edit the idea that my hard work contributed to making a better encyclopedia. The joy felt when I found a topic that lacked explanation became the driving force for editing. I thought it was a small group of people and I thought it was their job to create a collective intelligence. However, as I edited, I realized that spontaneity and enjoyment were very important factors in creating Wikipedia. 2.
