W5: After reading the video and aritlces

 1. Summary

The Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a soap box, dictionary, newspaper, storage. So, understandin the scope of Wikipedia is important. If don’t mind it, your article or contribution can be deleted. Every Wikipedian has right to recommend articles to delete and to debate.

Although, due to problems such as homonyms, collision can occur. Like this case of disambiguation deal with present link list or etc. The article “The Challenges of Consensus” describe the history of Wikipedia’s effort for consensus. What seems trivial can also be a problem in the community.

However, sometimes we need a dictator in power to restrain a man who spoils an agreement. The article “The Benevolent Dictator” comments on leadership within Wikipedia’s co-founder Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales’s story. They had different view of Wikipedia and leadership. This article gives a positive assessment of Wales and describe the leadership elements he had.

2. Interesting Point

Wikipedia, an open space for anyone to contribute, seems to be completely equal or should be. But, that is why we need a benevolent dictator. Those two sentences appears to be conflicting. After reading this article, I was able to consider the factors for healthy power relations.

3. Discussion Point

Can Wales’s leadership apply to other organisations besides Wikipedia? What are the characteristics of a community where this leadership is appropriate?
