W5: Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship? / Pak Chan Young

1.  Opinion

The advantage of Wikipedia is that anyone can participate. Free writing and editing greatly help Wikipedia function as a collective intelligence. Censorship and management are exactly different parts. Censorship is the pre-written stage, and management is the post-written stage. In Wikipedia, discussions on the deletion continue. Post-management of incorrect information is a necessary part. However, censorship creates difficulties from the stage of registering information. There are also concerns that such criteria may not be discussed sufficiently. Pre-censorship can also make users who want to share information self-censorship. The scary thing about censorship is that it causes self-censorship. Eventually, many people are reluctant to share information through self-censorship. So, in my opinion, Wikipedia's refusal to censor is essential to function as a media of collective intelligence. I think it is inevitable to protect the voluntary participation, commonality and openness of many people.

2. Discussion

What should we do about the content of Wikipedia in each country being different in controversial historical facts? If history is distorted, it should be modified, but it may be difficult to modify it because it is a process managed through consensus. What should Wikipedia do to get out of this problem of conflict between countries? It is a difficult problem to solve because it cannot exclude all controversial information.

Comments

  1. Wikipedia warns in advance of historically problematic articles. Dokdo in Wikipedia, for example, is renamed as 'Liancourt Rocks', and Wikipedia stated that the name is controversial. I think this problem will be maintained unless it is officially solved.
