W5.1 The Benevolent Dictator

Summary

Through the reading of this chapter, it is not easy to reach a consensus in Wikipedia. Appreciation of the community and its collaborative culture is key to understanding Wikipedia. Despite its good-faith collaborative culture, its egalitarian ethos, and its openness — or because of it — Wikipedia has been shaped by authorial leadership. An informal benevolent dictator serves to gently guide the community, to mediate internal disputes between those of good-faith, and to defend against those acting in bad faith.

Interesting

From this chapter, it can be seen that Jimmy Wales created Wikipedia because he wanted to create Wikipedia as an interactive community. It is not an encyclopedia that does not tolerate errors. I think the culture inside the Wikipedia is quite different from the culture of the outside world. Enjoy its own community, communication methods, rules of procedure, process of doing things, and everything in accordance with the rules. Such a set of rules and procedures is sometimes difficult to find on clones other than Wikipedia. Through this article, we can understand that Wikipedia’s spirit of negotiation, non-violence, discussion, compromise, not blindly following democracy, and facing problem-solving has a lot to do with Jimmy Wales himself.

Discussion

What is the charm of Wikipedia that makes you, as a Wikipedia participant, willing to follow the rules of Wikipedia.
