Who write Wikipedia?
1.Summary
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone
can edit. So, anyone who wants to edit can edit Wikipedia. In this class, I
learned various theories related to Wikipedia. The first is the "bazzal
model". This model argues that all active people are equal, while the
"cathedral model" argues that vertically, hierarchies exist more
clearly. The next is “Window Theory”. The Broken Window Theory is a theory of
the norm-setting and signaling effects for additional crime and anti-social
behavior. In this theory, it is said that maintaining an orderly condition and
monitoring are important. Finally, “Lessig's pathetic dot theory” says that our
behavior has four effects. The four are Market, Law, Norms, and Architecture.
With these four theories, I found out that
there are numerous accounts on Wikipedia, but the actual participants are
around 30,000 to 100,000. Also, it was found that there was a clear difference
in participation rates by gender and age.
2. An interesting point I learned & Question
As mentioned earlier, I found that the
participation rate is very different depending on age and gender. Through this
class, I learned that 59% of Wikipedia editors are in their 17-40s, and 91% of
Wikipedia editors are male. I was very interested in the difference according
to gender rather than the participation rate by age. As for age, people who are
more familiar with computers are more likely to access Wikipedia than
generations who are not familiar with computers. So, I think the difference can
be big by age group. However, I wondered why there were much more male
participants than female participants. Why is the participation rate of women
so low? I wonder what you think about the reason.
Jisoo, I have a question about the same topic as you. There is a big difference between female and male editors, so what characteristics of gender is it related to? It may be a biased idea, but men seem to enjoy dealing with and using computers more than women do. The exact figures are unknown, but if it is true that men spend more time on computers than women, this will likely affect Wikipedia editors' statistics.
ReplyDeleteIn my subjective opinion, the atmosphere of Wikipedia articles is mostly not soft. Also, when you enter Wikipedia's page or edit page, you will be able to confirm that the interface is too outdated. Because of this, women don't seem to use it well.
