W7 : Good Faith Collaboration : The Culture of Wikipedia / Park Chan Young (박찬영)

1. Summary

The book explains how Wikipedia has become a successful encyclopedia. Good-will cooperation is a very important key to Wikipedia's functioning properly. Openness is also an important direction among Wikipedia's policies. This book is very helpful in understanding collaborative culture. It describes Wikipedia in terms of socio-cultural and technological aspects. It also allows Wikipedia to face and reflect on its problems. This book is fundamental to Wikipedia research. Wikipedia tries to maintain its neutrality as much as possible, if not impossible. Wikipedia exists only to tell facts, not to judge right or wrong, or to judge truth and falsehood. Neutrality can also be maintained by a number of cooperations and discussions.

2. Interesting point

Good faith cooperation is a characteristic that represents Wikipedia. Individuals are among the targets of cooperation on Wikipedia. In modern society, a culture of sharing things, such as a shared economy, is developing. But on the contrary, individualism is also strengthening. There is also growing vigilance against others and hate crimes such as racism around the world. Every day, values such as openness and cooperation are collapsing. As such, the ideals that Wikipedia pursues and our reality are different.

3. Discussion point

Good faith collaboration continue to be maintained in the future? Can we still dream of hope for society by watching Wikipedia?
