W13: The importance of Organization

 Summary

The texts on this week describe some of the Wikipedia’s efficient tools, Category and List, Navigational Template.

Like the Internet is called a sea of information, there are a lot of information on the internet. However, most of them are poorly organized, we wastes a lot of time finding quality information. Wikipedia also has this problem. When you ask in natural language(ex: How's the COVID-19 confirmed trend?), Wikipedia cannot answer. So, Wikipedia is striving for a better analysis. One of the examples is organization tool: Category and List, Navigational Template.

redirection is a blank page but send the reader to another article. or section of an article. For example, when search "kpop" in the Wikipedia, it redirect to "k-pop". disambiguation is used when there are several homonyms. For example, "Right" can be interpreted as both the kind of direction and idea such as human rights. Redirection and Disambiguation are not error. They complement each other. These are managed through Category, List and Navigational Template.

Category, List and Navigational Template can help categorizing an article and searching. So, an article should have at least one category. This category makes it easier for documents to be found.

What I learned new and felt interesting

I haven't thought about the pros/cons of Category, List and Navigational Template in a while. For me, the Category and List are distinctly different but they seem similar. This week's video(The importance of organizations…) analyzed the pros and cons of each tool in detail. Through this week's texts, I am certainly aware of the difference between these. It would be a great help to more efficient article writing and Wikipedia activities.

Also, the content of Wikidata and Semantic Wikipedia was interested. I didn’t know the existence of them. It was surprising to think that the day might come when Wikipedia will answer natural language questions like Siri. It is also new to know that organization tools are intended to help with analysis. I want to know more about Wikipedia analysis in terms of linguistics. I think it could be linked to sociology.

Discussion Point

Did you use Category, List or Navigational Template to find an article what you want? If you tried it, was it convenient? How was it to edit them? When I first encountered them, it was difficult to see the difference between categories and lists. I don't think it's intuitive enough.  What ways would it take for more people to use Category, List and Navigational Template efficiently?
