W13/After reading “Categorization”/HARI KIM

Summary)

Categorization is a kind of list for dividing topics, and it helps users find information easily. All documents must be in at least one category. Therefore, categories must be well chosen.

How are the numerous articles on Wikipedia categorized? First, the category should be chosen as the most helpful topic when someone reads the article. And usually an article doesn't exist in both the top and the subcategories at the same time. If there are few documents in the category you have in mind, you should check to see if they belong to a subcategory. It is also important to maintain a "neutral" perspective when categorizing.

New/Interesting things I learned)

I learned that usually one document does not exist in both the upper and subcategories at the same time. Before I knew this information, I had made a mistake in categorizing documents. In categorizing articles about rivers, the article was already part of a subcategory, but I have made mistakes by adding a top category. Therefore, it was interesting to learn about categorization and I learned a lot from this lecture.

Discussion Point)

The criteria for categorizing plants are not the same all over the world. Even in the same country, the criteria for categories are different. Taxonomic views sometimes diverge over a plant. As such, the categorization system varies from country to country and from scholar to scholar. Then what criteria should we categorize in this case? What views should we follow? I'm curious about your opinion.

Comments

  1. I think the classification system of each country and region represents the perception of people in that country. Articles in different languages under the same entry are just for the convenience of people from all over the world to browse entries in their national languages. Therefore, I think that articles in different languages should be ranked according to the classification of each country.

    1. Thank you for your opinion. I was interested in your opinion that Wikipedia is divided by language, so it can be categorized according to each country's perception. However, if the perception of each scholar is different in the country, which scholar should we follow? I was curious about this, too.

  2. The discussion point is interesting. There are various perspectives and standards for each country, but I think it is right to classify them based on what is most commonly thought.
