W13: After reading "Categorization" - KIM JINA
1. Summary
This book describes the categorization of Wikipedia. Categorization refers to the strategy of organizing objects or concepts using common attributes, uses, and relationships. Categorization has a significant impact on the formation of concepts. It helps humans easily identify, understand, and remember ideas. Categorization is done hierarchically.
Categorization is considered synonymous with classification. Categorization allows humans to construct objects and ideas that exist around them and simplify their understanding of the world.
Social classification consists of classifying humans into groups to identify them according to different criteria. Classification is a process that cognitive scientists study, but it can also be studied as a social activity. Social classification differs from classification of other objects because it means creating categories for oneself and others as human beings.
2. Interesting points
Some social categories account for a larger proportion of society than others. An example is the 'race. However, I thought there was also discrimination in the process of classifying people because they were different. The discrimination that Asians receive, the discrimination that blacks receive.
3. Discussion
When we think about social categorization, the advantage is high cognitive efficiency, and on the contrary, the disadvantage is that information can be distorted, so what position should we take? Maybe categorization leads to prejudice, resulting in people being discriminated against by prejudice?
