W15: Understanding Wikipedia: Manual of Style (extra blogging)
1. Summary
I learned how to
write Wikipedia articles. This is Wikipedia's own style of writing articles
called MoS. The reason for this format is to be a clearer and more sustainable
Wikipedia.
A Wikipedia
article consists of a lead, which is the face of the article, and each section
followed by headings. Sentences in the lead should not be taken from the
article, but should be written in a way that is clear and arouses interest in
the article.
In the heading,
definite and indefinite articles are omitted, and it is discouraged to use the
title of the article as it is. Also, usually only the starting alphabet is
written in uppercase.
The first heading
is the title of the article, encompassing the article itself. In principle,
headings in articles are indented according to the hierarchical structure.
In addition,
photos, various links and citations inserted into articles can be used
according to the rules. Naturally, duplicates should be avoided and controversial
ones should not be used. In the case of a link, it should be inserted with a
good distinction between internal and external links.
There are various
rules in this one as well, and although these rules are very many and difficult
to list like this, but I experienced that if I write an article carefully every
sentence, it acts as a shortcut to write an article well.
2. Impressive
As it is a
participatory encyclopedia, I thought that I would just have to keep the
encyclopedia format, but it is impressive that Wikipedia has its own “distinct”
style manual. It is natural since the unique structure, hierarchy, and sections
of Wikipedia articles clearly exist. Also, due to the unique characteristics of
Wiki, that is, it links various information inside and outside Wikipedia, and
the citations that support the articles, a detailed style manual is required.
Personally,
strictly following Wikipedia's style guide is annoying, but I feel like it
helps make Wikipedia fun.
3. Discussion
Points
Did you have any
difficulties in carrying out our main wiki project while maintaining this
Wikipedia style?
In my case, I
struggled with adding citations. For example, if not just one sentence but all
the sentences in a paragraph have sources in one source, I thought about how to
display them.
Please let me know
if you have encountered such difficulties or have resolved any difficulties.
