What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?
Before taking this class, to be honest, I was curious as
to who added all the Wikipedia content. For me, Wikipedia was a site I visited
while doing a search, so I had almost zero knowledge and information. So, I was
able to learn a lot of content while listening to the lectures this semester.
First, I could feel the power of the collective
intelligence platform. While editing Wikipedia, I created a new document myself,
and I saw that references and some information were added within a day after I
made the document. I think that such rapid feedback and growth is the greatest
power that collective intelligence can have.
Second, I was able to learn the principle of operation by
closely examining Wikipedia, which I only knew how to use. Actually, my
perception of Wikipedia before taking the class was unreliable information.
However, while taking the class, I learned the principles of Wikipedia
operation, user manual, and examine. Then I realized that information was
gathered in a sophisticated system. Now, I can search for information in a much
more efficient way than before I took a class.
In addition, I learned that all sites are based on free
service, and that there are various services such as commons, data, and media
wiki in Wikipedia. This kind of learning will help me to obtain quality
information in the future.’
How is this assignment different from more traditional
student assignments?
The work I did while listening to the existing classes
and Wikipedia are really different. I realized that a class in which my
homework, not theory, is the main thing can be burdensome for students, but
there is a lot to learn. In the beginning, I thought I understood enough when I
listened to the lecture, but when I tried to do it myself on Wikipedia, it
sometimes didn't work. That time I was so embarrassed. It seemed easy when I
heard it, but when I tried everything myself, the theory and practice were very
different. As I learn this one by one, I can see that my abilities are
increasing, so I felt proud as I proceeded with the assignment.
If the assignments we've done so far have been school
assignments pretending to be real, editing Wikipedia and publishing articles
has all been real action itself. I think the biggest difference is that my
edits are reflected and have an impact on people all over the world. So I felt
more responsible than the previous assignments, and I proceeded with the
assignments every week more meticulously. I don't think I'll be able to forget
it because I learned it by running into my own assignment.
Oh, I read your opinion well. Now that I know more about Wikipedia than when I didn't know much about Wikipedia, I can use more materials as you say. Not only this, but I was also scared because my editing could affect the whole world, but I became responsible and started to work harder on my assignment!
