W15/ What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?/HARI KIM

“What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?”

Q. What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?👀

A.

Through weekly editing of Wikipedia in this class, I was able to develop Wikipedia's basic rules to information exploration skills.

First, I realized that 'neutrality' is important in Wikipedia. Wikipedia should contain objective facts, not subjective opinions. At first, I thought the editor's subjective opinion would be inevitable because so many people participated in the editing. But according to Harvard University researchers, Wikipedia's content, which once showed a clear political bias, is becoming increasingly neutral over time. The power of collective intelligence that Wikipedia believes in is keeping 'neutrality'.

Next, we learned the importance of sources on Wikipedia. When writing any information, you have to reveal a reliable source of information that you can trust. I learned the importance of the source deeply in the process of editing Wikipedia, and even when writing reports, I have made sure to write reliable sources.

Finally, I was able to develop my ability to explore information. I searched Wikipedia for a lot of information to make new edits every week. In the process, I learned how to find a reliable source and learned how to search with important keywords. I got to know 'Google Scholar' as a trusted source, and I got to know 'Wikimedia Commons', where I can freely share and access multimedia files such as pictures and sounds.

Q. How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?😄

A.

First of all, it was different from the traditional task to explore and edit new information on my own every week. The traditional assignment was to go through the process of learning the given information, and the assignment in this class was to find the information on its own every week and gain a lot of knowledge in many ways. And I was able to develop my creative thinking skills by thinking about which topic to edit.

Also, this assignment was different from the traditional one to go through a weekly blog posting of my thoughts. I was interested in the process of listening to lectures every week and reading the given text, organizing my thoughts in writing and discussing with others. It was good not only to put what I learned into my head but also to develop the ability to express it outside.
