W15) What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? /박채정, PARK CHAEJEONG
What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?
Since I entered the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, I have had a lot of team projects with various people. And through these activities, I could feel and learn the power of 'collective intelligence'. However, it was very interesting that 'collective intelligence' could be found in the Internet environment, and I thought I should take this lecture to get another lesson.
In fact, Wikipedia was a strange site for me. I've only heard the name, but I've never looked for it. This is because I used Google or Naver a lot when searching for data or information while working on a team project. However, I learned about Wikipedia in this lecture and realized that the more I used it, the more helpful it was to my activities. In conclusion, objective data are needed in the task of deriving problems and results and suggesting solutions, and the appropriate site to support them is Wikipedia.
Looking back on the first time I used Wikipedia, I was so familiar with Naver's format that I wondered if I was doing well or if it was right to do so, and I went through various trials and errors. Sometimes it was not sufficient to be used as a source, so I searched again, and received a warning message regarding copyright. So whenever Wikipedia's alarm went off, I was a little scared and lost confidence. But going through all this, I was able to grow up even more by correcting myself again in the right direction. Because I could learn the importance of information delivery, communication with people, cooperation, and regularity. It is no exaggeration to say that the weekly editing assignment was the most helpful for me to understand Wikipedia faster and more closely. Furthermore, it was meaningful that what Wikipedia wanted to pursue and various functions of Wikipedia could be learned first through the professor's lecture (theory) and actually applied.
Although this semester's class is over, I will continue to use Wikipedia based on the experience and advice that the professor left for me.
How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?
I think it's definitely a different class from the traditional assignment. Like traditional assignments, students are not simply asked to throw topics and do assignments. For example, when I edited Wikipedia in this class, I edited mainly what I was interested in, and edited weekly issues and trends. In other words, I was able to create an opportunity to think one more time about what I would do independently and what direction I would choose as the theme. And this process allowed me to develop myself in an existing framework.
Finally, I could get immediate feedback from Wikipedia users as well as professors, so I could know what parts I should revise and supplement. This helped me to use Wikipedia skillfully. It was a meaningful time to learn about good cooperation culture in Internet culture.
Hello, Chaejeong! I also learned to communicate with others. While editing Wikipedia articles, I debated about the information of an article with someone. It made me accumulate a lot of knowledge. Also, I had to talk to someone with respect so in this course, I learned the attitude that I should have when discussing opinions. You seem to learn a lot of things from this class like me, which makes me feel glad!
