W15: What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?

In the course of Collective Intelligence in Practice, I can get to know Wikipedia and directly participate in editing Wikipedia. Before taking this class, I did not know anything about Wikipedia. When I look for what I want to know, I just use news articles and academic papers. So at first, Wikipedia was so unfamiliar that despite Professor Piotr’s classes, I feel Wikipedia editing is so difficult. However, editing 10 Wikipedia articles every week and doing the main project in Wikipedia more and more, I am used to editing articles in Wikipedia. I learned a lot from Wikipedia in the process of getting used to it. I would like to talk about what I learned in Wikipedia from now on.

First, I learned a lot of knowledge for my dream job by reading many articles. The reason why I read many articles is actually to know how to edit articles in Wikipedia. However, while understanding Wikipedia rules from other articles, I could accumulate much knowledge. For example, I improved my English speaking and writing ability because I edited Wikipedia articles in English a lot and got to know many English words which I did not know before. I was also able to get information about the enterprise that I was interested in. It was a great experience for me who wanted to have a global job.

Moreover, I learned the importance of sources. Wikipedia has strict rules about sources. So when I edited Wikipedia articles, I really cared about writing down sources. The reason why Wikipedia really cares about a source is that it is the same with stealing someone’s property to write down information without sources. Also the information with clear sources makes Wikipedia be more objective and reliable. While editing Wikipedia articles, I realized the importance and roles of a source.

Lastly, I could get an ability of objective writing. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. So people have to keep their objective perspective when editing Wikipedia articles. I also tried to write information based on the facts without any emotion. These experiences helped me improve my logical and objective writing skills.

This assignment was nice because I can actually do what I learned from classes. If I just took a course without practical practice, I would feel the class is so boring. But I really enjoyed the class with editing Wikipedia! Also, it was a good experience to do something steadily. It gave me a feeling of pride and joy. I have gained a lot from this class and thank the professor for providing these classes.

  1. Hi, Soyeon.
At first, you had a similar problem as me, but I think we learned a lot from each other through this class. Every effort you make to understand Wikipedia seems to have had more valuable experience and results. Although the class is over, but I hope we can use what we have learned through Wikipedia and learn a lot from now on!
