W15: What did I learn while editing Wikipedia? How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments? Is it more fun?/진신

At the time of writing this blog, I just finished the fifth week of editing. Before I knew it, I had already learned about Wikipedia for 1 semester. Every interface I have edited is the work of my painstaking efforts. I am very grateful that this course allowed me to truly know and understand Wikipedia. Every time the professor replied "excellent", "good job" and "very good", it was my greatest encouragement. Every time they remind me of my shortcomings and encourage me to try more, I have more discoveries about Wikipedia.

Views on this course:

Because Wikipedia is not available in mainland China, people in mainland China only know that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, but few people actually know about its editor. I am honored to be able to choose and study this course to learn about Wikipedia in my university life. This lesson fully let me grab the charm of Wikipedia.

Compared with the theoretical courses, I prefer a practical course. Only through continuous practice can the theoretical knowledge be fully digested, and problems can be discovered and solved in practice, to truly understand and use Wikipedia. Is very important. If there is no practice in this class, and it just keeps telling us what Wikipedia is, then I think this lesson will lose its meaning and charm.

I consider editing Wikipedia is a very interesting thing. It's not because I'm studying for such a course that's why I pointed out that this. It's because every time I finish editing an article. I feel a little sense of accomplishment. This is part of the pleasures that editing Wikipedia brings to me.

Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia. I also learned the importance of objective facts in the learning and editing of Wikipedia. When we put forward a certain conclusion, we need to provide a corresponding basis. Wikipedia introduces collective creation and co-editing into writing, to some extent. It is more comprehensive than traditional encyclopedias. Of course, in more cases, it is difficult for this kind of free editing to be objective and accurate. This is objective. But I am afraid that there is not an omniscient, objective, and true encyclopedia in the world. The purpose of Wikipedia is to allow everyone in the world to have free access to the total knowledge of this world.

This idea is consistent with the encyclopedic thinking of the Enlightenment period. What struck me most is that every volunteer in Wikipedia is consciously abiding by Wikipedia's community guidelines. I saw the comments of other editors on the interface of the professor, and each commenter expressed ' love' and harmony while asking questions. This makes me feel that Wikipedia is not only a free encyclopedia but also a harmonious and friendly community. There are almost no meaningless editing wars and tit-for-tat in the Wikipedia community, which makes Wikipedia less expensive internally. All volunteers will focus on editing articles and article content. This makes Wikipedia a platform where anyone can browse and share knowledge freely.

After editing Wikipedia for a semester, I found that Chinese Wikipedia is quite scarce compared to English Wikipedia. The content of the article is imperfect, and the inaccuracy of the entry is very high. In the editing of this semester, I often feel distressed because many articles are not perfect. This is a lot of work. I think this semester of Wikipedia learning is coming to an end, but I don't think my role as a Wikipedia editor will end here. I will continue to edit in Wikipedia. Give full play to one's own language advantages, and continue to actively optimize and perfect Chinese articles.

Comments

  1. There is not much information about Wikipedia editors in Korea either. Also, there are many articles that are incomplete information in Korean articles. The reason is that there are not many Korean and Chinese Wikipedia editors compared to other countries, and only a few of them may be writing Wikipedia articles. Fortunately, now that we've learned how to edit Wikipedia, let's continue to contribute to editing articles after class!
